Shorter days, cooler mornings, busy weeks — it’s natural for our rhythm to change. This time of year often invites us to slow down, to move with a little more care, and to simplify.

If your yoga practice has felt quieter or harder to return to recently, you’re not alone — and you haven’t fallen behind. Yoga isn’t something to keep up with. It’s something you return to, gently, when the moment is right.
At Stable Yoga, we’re leaning into this seasonal shift with classes that support grounding and regulation rather than pushing or striving.

Our Gentle Flow Yoga with Keri on Wednesday 8.30am and also on Friday at 10.30am are a wonderful place to begin or return — offering unhurried movement, simple breath practices, and time to settle the nervous system.

Consistency doesn’t mean doing more — it means meeting yourself where you are, again and again.

We look forward to seeing you on the mat.

What are your thoughts on New Year’s resolutions…?

Whether you set one or several each year, stick to them or not, or refuse to set yourself up for failure(!) this is the time of year when we think about maybe doing some things differently in the year ahead. According to statistics, 47% of Brits set the New Year’s resolution to become fitter and get more exercise.

Perhaps you’d like to improve your mental health too? To finally sort out that aching lower back, or stiff hips & shoulders? To schedule some me-time every week? To become stronger and more flexible? To be less prone to stress and feel more self-confident? To just try something new?

A regular yoga class will help with all of the above.

The Spring Term at Stable Yoga kicks off on Monday 5th January. Experienced, warm and welcoming instructors teach 10 classes, 6 days a week, with regular one-off weekend workshops and sound healings too. 🧡
Class styles include Hatha, Pregnancy, Flow, Chair yoga, Yin, Forrest yoga and our own unique ‘Mostly for Men’ class (although ladies welcome!)

Still only £10 per class if you buy a batch of credits or £13 for drop-ins. If you’re new to yoga, or just a newcomer to our beautiful, peaceful studio, get in touch at info@stableyoga.co.uk and ask for a free trial.

For further info about the studio, teachers, styles of yoga, our weekly timetable, or to book a class, visit www.stableyoga.co.uk.

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year and we hope to see you on the mat soon!

Christmas is a time of giving - and sometimes the best gifts have no monetary value: time spent vs. cash spent. 🧡

That said, if this is the time of year when you think about making a donation to a good cause, may we suggest two charities close to our hearts that you may like to consider supporting:

1) The Prison Phoenix Trust offers hope and healing to people in prison through meditation and yoga. They support these simple breath-based practices in more than 200 prison and other secure establishments in the UK and Ireland. In 1986 Ann Wetherall, the Prison Phoenix Trust’s founder, was working on a research project investigating spiritual experiences arising from imprisonment. She found there was a spiritual hunger among prisoners that was not being met. She felt if prisoners were introduced to disciplines like meditation and yoga, and supported in their efforts they might feel differently about themselves. The Prison Phoenix Trust was registered as a charity in July ’88 and their work is funded solely by donations. https://www.theppt.org.uk

2) Switchback is a rehabilitation charity which supports young people to find a way out of the justice system and to build stable, rewarding lives. Nationally, more than 40% of prison leavers reoffend within a year of release and fewer than a fifth move in to work. This year Switchback is one of The Times and Sunday Times’ chosen charities. The Times ran a headline on December 1st: ‘Yoga sessions help prisoners discover peace on the inside’ – for more information on their work and mentorship schemes visit https://switchback.org.uk, or go to thetimes.com/christmasappeal

Those of us who practice yoga and are fortunate to have access to excellent facilities and inspiring teachers will know of the benefits that this ancient practice can bring. These two charities are doing wonderful work in spreading the word to others less fortunate.

Yoga for an improved night's sleep.

Yoga can be a powerful support, especially when sleep feels restless or the mind won’t settle.

If what you’re craving is calm and serenity, gentle forward bends are a wonderful place to start. Poses like Standing Forward Bend, Wide-Legged Forward Fold, Downward Dog, Head-to-Knee Pose and Seated Forward Bend naturally quiet the nervous system. When supported with blankets or bolsters and held for longer periods, they encourage the body to soften and the mind to slow.

When the forehead rests gently into support, it can stimulate the relaxation response — helping to calm the brain and ease you toward rest. If forward folds feel agitating rather than soothing, supported reclining poses such as Reclined Bound Angle, Reclining Hero or a supported Bridge can be more settling.

In yoga tradition, inversions are especially helpful for sleep. Legs-up-the-Wall, Plough Pose, and supported Shoulderstand (or a version with the hips supported on blocks/books or even a chair) can be deeply restorative — particularly when insomnia is linked to hormonal imbalance. Practiced before bed, they help prepare the body for sleep; practised during the day, they may help restore what’s been missed.

And finally, never underestimate the power of Savasana. Sometimes, the simplest pose — resting completely — is the one that allows sleep to arrive.

At Stable Yoga, we believe rest is not a luxury. It’s a vital part of wellbeing.

BOAT POSE

This easy pose helps build physical strength, mental focus and stability from the inside out. It is a seated balance where you support your body on your sitting bones lifting your legs and torso to create a ‘’V’’ shape resembling a boat. Holding your body in a ‘’V’’ shape will challenge your balance and teach you to make micro adjustments to stay upright. These minor adjustments are important. In the words of Jon Kabat-Zinn ‘the little things? The little moments? They aren’t little.’

A strong core is the foundation of good posture, and this pose by strengthening the abdominal wall and back muscles will help you to stand and sit taller. Hopefully it will reduce our tendency to slouch, which may happen over the festive season, in crowded rooms at party time...

Boat is a prime example of how Yoga poses involve the body and mind for a comprehensive sense of well-being. The importance of good posture is stressed by all Yoga teachers and is fundamental to our practice. Bad posture will come home to roost later in life so it is something to work on now. Boat pose is an easy way to try and avert posture problems as it strengthens the core, improves balance and stability, stimulates abdominal organs, strengthens the hip flexors and spine and builds mental focus. Quite a package from a simple Yoga pose.

Stable Yoga is offering a wide range of classes at a variety of times with a variety of teachers and styles, through December and the holiday period. These are available to book now and include our monthly Vinyasa Flow & Meditation class on Sunday 14th December from 10 - 11.30am: one hour of vibrant, revitalising Vinyasa Flow, followed by a deep 30 minute Meditation.

A quiet pause before the year turns…

We’re gathering for a peaceful hour to honour the Winter Solstice, Saturday 20th December at 4.30pm - 5.30pm — a time to slow down, soften, and gently reflect on what we’re ready to release before the new year arrives.

We’re delighted to welcome back Laura Penneycard (), who will guide us through:

🧡grounding meditation.🧡simple breath practice.🧡journaling prompts to take away.🧡a touch of one-to-one care with essential oils & energy work.🧡and a long, soothing sound journey for deep rest and restoration.

Laura works intuitively with Himalayan singing bowls, gongs, percussive instruments and her voice, creating a sonic space to settle the nervous system and reconnect with your inner landscape.

At this busy time of year, these pockets of stillness matter. A chance to meet yourself gently, release what no longer serves you.

There are still a couple of spaces, so don’t delay booking via Glofox (under the Courses tab) or on our website: https://www.stableyoga.co.uk/online-booking (click Courses here too).

We look forward to welcoming you for this rewarding event.🧡

Is your diary getting overstuffed?
Are you already chasing your tail preparing for the festive season?
Do you feel your stress levels rising when you look at your To Do list?

All of us benefit from periods of calm - ideally every day - to rest; to contemplate; to step off the hamster wheel of life and to be still for a while. And many of us need to "grow a 'no'". Consider whether it's an overactive sense of duty or a tendency to people-please that makes us say 'yes' to every request or invitation?

Time is precious, so we need to think about our priorities - what's really important to us and what do we need (and secretly long) to let go? As Thich Nhat Hanh says, we are never wasting time when we're apparently doing 'nothing' - it is key to our health and wellbeing, giving us time to think, to heal, to check in with ourselves, and to appreciate life at a slower pace.

If doing your yoga practice is one of your priorities, with 10 classes at Stable Yoga to choose from each week you can always schedule that vital me-time.

There will be lots of sessions over the Christmas break (check the calendar), or join us at one of our one-off Courses/workshops:
Yoga & Wreath-making afternoon on Sunday 30th November,
Vinyasa Flow & Longer Meditation on the morning of Sunday 14th December,
Winter Solstice Sound Healing evening on Saturday 20th December, or Soulful Saturday workshop on Saturday 31st January.

Click 'Courses' here: https://www.stableyoga.co.uk/online-booking or in the Glofox app (search first for Stable Yoga). Or click the link in bio...

We look forward to seeing you for some me-time!

A TIME FOR LETTING GO

There is a Zen proverb: ‘Let go or be dragged’. This sounds a bit harsh, so the words of Deepak Chopra may be a more pleasant reflection: ‘In the process of letting go, you will lose many things from the past, but you will find yourself’.

The themes of a Yoga class and the intentions we may set for that class are often in step with the seasons or the time of year or with Nature. Fireworks day is probably not so appropriate, but Remembrance Sunday is more so, and with Nature the shedding of leaves provides a good yogic metaphorical lesson for us all.

Aside from ‘shedding’, Autumn is also a time to gather, to store, to plant, to adjust and to make good use of any abundance. It is a good time to set our own intentions in our Yoga classes and to get in step with Nature by acting accordingly. Yoga encourages us to let go and breathe. Letting go of those things that no longer serve us is a good lesson to take from Nature, especially in the Autumn months when we can witness and appreciate how holding on drains energy. Trees teach us that letting go is not a sign of weakness but a natural and necessary part of growth and reminds us that all states, even the most beautiful, are temporary.

For Yogis this is a good season which encourages us to ‘shed some leaves’, adjust and appreciate what we have. Autumn reminds us that the process of change continues to be the fundamental law of nature and life.

So, a good time for Yoga – either to start, to resume, or to continue.
Stable Yoga offers a wide range of classes at a variety of times with a variety of teachers and styles. So, if one doesn’t suit you the chances are that one of the others will. Try it and see.

YOGA : ON A MONDAY – IN CLASS OR ON LINE

Monday has always been a notoriously difficult day. Most of us have to shift from Sunday’s relaxation to Monday’s demands. The weekend has a hangover, and it is called Monday. For some of us a sense of dread and anxiety can even creep in on a Sunday afternoon. This can often be traced back to schooldays, but it can endure long after these are over. The ‘I will do it next week’ is suddenly upon us and it is back to Monday again. It is universally known as the worst day of the week, with jokes and songs like ‘Manic Monday’ and ‘I don’t like Mondays’ reinforcing this notion. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So, what to do? The answer is to schedule in some Yoga! Stable Yoga has a class at the very sociable time of 9.15am on a Monday and, if you are unable to attend in person, the practice is also live-streamed on Zoom. So, why not treat yourself, book in and enjoy the peace and rejuvenation of a Yoga practice. This class is usually recorded too, so contact info@stableyoga.co.uk and ask Lucy for the YouTube link if you would like to do the class later in the day/week?

It is said that Yoga can put a spring in your step and this may be just what you need to turn the day around and banish the Monday blues.

In addition to Mondays and the usual wide selection of classes at Stable Yoga, there is a special, one-off, 90 minute Vinyasa and Meditation class on Sunday 2nd November starting at 10.00am (2 class credits for regular weekly students and £25 for drop-ins). To view and book classes (and any upcoming courses) please visit the Stable Yoga website at https://www.stableyoga.co.uk or download the free Glofox app and search for Stable Yoga.
