Our lovely Julie was just down delivering another load of fresh vegetables to Tracey and our great friends at The Warehouse Newtownards. Straight out of the ground this morning and straight to the kitchen of the food bank for all their amazing service users.

Apples 🍏 and Pears 🍐

Our community orchard is coming on strong with our fruit trees really starting to bear some produce, and after a final clearing out of our polytunnels this morning we were able to put together another great selection of fresh items (including tomatoes, coco melons, chard, apples and runner beans) that will be on its way to The Warehouse Newtownards

We have also been weeding and really tidying up the space along with planting some fresh onion seeds that will have no problem growing at this time of year 🧅

There are big plans ahead for the winter months to keep us busy, so keep an eye on here and see how they develop.

HAVE YOUR SAY 📢

Our great friends at Ards & North Down Borough Council are delighted to let you know that the Strangford and Lecale AONB Landscape Connections Community Survey has launched.

This is an exciting opportunity for everyone who cares about the Strangford and Lecale landscape to help shape its future. The survey asks for views on what matters most in the area, from our wildlife and heritage to community connections and access to nature. It also invites ideas on how the landscape can be more inclusive, resilient, and celebrated for generations to come.

The responses we gather will play an important role in guiding our application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund later this year. If successful, the project will enter a development phase in 2026, followed by a long-term programme of investment and community activity.

We would be very grateful if you could:
• Take part in the survey yourselves, and
• Share it widely with your networks, friends, and communities.

Your support will ensure that as many voices as possible are heard in this important stage of the project.

Lets Restore Community Work 🤝

Julie and I are currently working on a very exciting proposal for a funding opportunity which will involve our great friends at Habitat ReStore Newtownards, and what a pleasure it was to pop down and meet their amazing manager Cole and volunteer coordinator Paula this morning and chat everything over with them.

I'm not going to spoil the surprise, just watch this space 👀

Hang me out to dry 🧅

Those amazing Plough on gents were back this morning, this week we have planted some chard, kale, winter onions and lettuce, whilst also thinning out our carrot plants and also hanging up our freshly picked onions to dry them out 🫶

I was also able to deliver some freshly picked runner beans, rhubarb, apples and cooking apples to our great friends The Warehouse Newtownards.

Whilst at the Warehouse Megan and her amazing team kindly donated some delicious freshly cooked meals (containing our vegetables) and some lovely baps for our community freezer, so pop in and see us if you need some 🤤

Don't forget we still have lots of household items in our foodbank that were kindly donated to us by the amazing guys from Portaferry Liverpool Supporters Club, so please pop in if you need anything at all.

Lights 💡Camera 🎥Action 💃

We are going Hollywood 🤩 As part of a recent collaboration between ourselves, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Ards & North Down Borough Council, Cr8 Theatre Company and the South Eastern Trust Multi-Disciplinary Team we have created a heartwarming, nostalgic play that is a trip down memory lane.

We give you - Peggy, Francis and me

Following the joy and connection of our recent story-gathering workshops, the creative team at Cre8 Theatre is delighted to present a brand new touring performance – Peggy, Francis and Me.

This heartwarming one-hour play is lovingly crafted from the cherished memories and stories generously shared by local participants. With playwright Sarah Lyle delving into archives and community voices, this beautiful reminiscence performance brings the past gently back to life for audiences across the Ards and North Down Borough.

From 25 September to 1 October 2025, Peggy, Francis and Me will tour care homes, community spaces, and arts venues throughout the borough – reconnecting people through shared stories and the power of memory.

✨ Public performances:
Kircubbin Community Centre - Thurs 25 Sept, 3pm
Ards Arts Centre - Fri 26 Sept, 11am (Ticket Source)
Rubane Farm, Kircubbin - Fri 26 Sept, 4pm (Eventbrite)
Ballywalter Village Hall - Mon 29 Sept, 2pm (Eventbrite)
Carrowdore Presbyterian Church - Tue 30 Sept, 10.30am (Eventbrite)
Portico, Portaferry - Wed 1 Oct, 11am (book with Portico)

We’d be honoured to have you join us for this special celebration of community, memory, and the stories that make us who we are.

Tickets are completely free and we would love for you to join us, so please book through Eventbrite by searching 'Peggy, Francis & Me', or contact us on 02842739021 and we can sort it for you.

Getting Creative in Carrowdore 🎨

Our Coffee in Carrowdore group were lucky enough to be joined this morning by the amazing Rosy Ennis Art for the first of four printing workshops 🫶 all in collaboration with our great friends from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland as part of their Age Friendly funding.

Rosy was amazing in showing us this amazing medium and we absolutely loved her banter and the finished masterpieces 😍

She will be back with us in Carrowdore & Ballyfrenis Presbyterian Church in a fortnights time for another Coffee in Carrowdore morning so why not join us for free coffee, free biscuits and free printing ☕
