An ankle sprain is one of the most common lower limb musculoskeletal injuries experienced, especially in the physically active. Up to 70% of people will experience this in their lifetime.
๐ ๐จ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ป๐ธ๐น๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐:
An ankle sprain is typically the result of an awkward landing or twist, often on the outside of the ankle. From unexpected changes in direction to sporting collisions, uneven terrains and even those dreaded high-heel stumbles โ ankle sprains can catch you off guard. The victims here are the ligaments, those crucial connective bands that keep your joint stable and prevent unwanted movement.
๐ค ๐ฆ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ถ๐ด๐ป๐:
โข You may hear a โpoppingโ sound or feel like your ankle gave way.
โข Pain, especially when weight bearing.
โข Swelling around the ankle and foot. It can range from mild to intense.
โข Bruising around the outside and/or inside that may creep down to your foot and toes, developing gradually.
โข Tenderness or pain when you touch the area.
โฐ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐:
There are differing severities of an ankle sprain. They can be categorised into mild/moderate/severe:
โข A mild ankle sprain can heal within a few weeks with self-management.
โข A moderate ankle sprain can take a few weeks to recover, however, you may be at risk of re-injuring your ankle within the first few months following injury.
โข A severe ankle sprain may take several months to recover, and some cases may require surgical intervention.
Did you know? Ankle sprains are prone to re-injury within the first year, so take care!
In most cases, you'll be back on your feet within 6-8 weeks, and back to your favourite activities in 8-12 weeks.

The quicker you can get advice, treatment and rehab, the better. We will assess/test the joint and provide the most appropriate advice and treatment relating to the severity of the injury. Obtaining and following the correct rehab is hugely important in recovery speed and REDUCING the likelihood of re-injury - like out 1:1 on-site session in picture 2!

You should consider attending A&E or calling 111 if: you can't weight bear and take 4 or more steps immediately after injury, there is unusual discolouration, experience persistent altered sensation, see immediate bruising and/or gross swelling, your ankle looks misshapen or you have a known blood disorder.
