Just a quick heads up folks, we will be open as usual through the Jubilee weekend. Tuesday to Saturday 9.30 to 5.30.

We do expect things to be quieter, but simply are not in a position to turn down business by closing extra days.

We would like to extend our congratulations to the Queen for her long reign of 70 years.

Have a good weekend whatever you are doing.

Green February posts she said. 28 days of medicinal plants she said.

Yes I did and today I'm posting something red, that's strictly not a plant - although it does grow on trees.

Its a mushroom. Definitely medicinal, in fact one of the best medicines as far as I'm concerned.

This is red reishi, a super hero of the mushroom world.

Reishi, like many other medicinal mushrooms is a rich natural source of immune enhancing beta glucans. It works on both TH1 and TH2 immune pathways - normalising immune responses.

In other words helping you stay resilient to viruses and less allergic at the same time.

Bringing immune responses back to a centred place rather than being at either end of the immune spectrum.

I love reishi and take some in supplement form every day to optimise my immune system. It's anti-inflammatory, is said to increase longevity, reduces blood pressure and encourages good sleep. Sounds PDG to me.

In clinic Reishi finds its way into prescriptions where we are dealing with high histamine, autoimmune inflammation, malignancy and immune deficit. All of these things far too common nowadays and a big part of a Medical Herbalists case load.

You can also buy Reishi over-the-counter here at Health Food and More. And during the spring and summer we sell lots of it for hay-fever as it works well without any side effects. Using it regularly seems to reset the allergic tendency so after a couple of seasons of reishi use the hay-fever appears much reduced overall.

If you suffer allergies or histamine related problems dig around and do some research into red reishi. Might be the remedy for you.

Meantime for me it's part of a daily regime which also contains cordyceps mushroom too. To stay tip top and fighting fit for a long long time I hope.

Stay well

February greens. And yes the answer is they are growing right now.

This month I'm posting a medicinal plant a day to green up grey February and remind us all what's just around the corner...or in the case of chickweed what's out there right now!

We Guinea Pig sat at New Year for a friend and the piggies enjoyed fresh chickweed that we found growing abundantly in a local field. The unseasonably mild weather has allowed it to thrive.

Chickweed is a moistening and cooling plant that can be eaten as a salad green or used medicinally as a herbal tea or tincture.

Traditionally its been used to treat hot and itchy skin, both as an internal medicine as well as an external treatment in the form of a poultice or cream/ointment.

But in addition to its use in herbal dermatology it is thought to help weight loss. It is rich in saponins that some people reckon breaks down fat. Saponins are soapy compounds - the long held theory is that chickweed washes fat away like washing up liquid taking grease off a plate.

If only weight loss was that easy.

In reality the saponins might help to reduce inflammation, which of course is a driver for obesity. Add this to it being a low calorie nutrient dense plant and you can understand it being a slimmers friend.

In my herbal clinic I rarely use it internally simply because there are more potent herbs available. I do however use it in creams for itchy skin if I am trying to break an itch/scratch cycle.

But as a free wild green food its second to none and can be consumed liberally as a salad green.

Which, if have it in your garden, will give you a never ending supply. Once you have it I don't think you can ever get rid of it. I can't anyway!

Happy herballing and foraging folks.

The effect was strongest with vitamin D, with significant risk reduction beginning more than 2 years after the start of daily supplementation.
