"There is no such thing as a baby.. there is a baby and someone".

This quote is attributed to Donald Winnicott, who is best known for his ideas about the "good enough parent". This focus on being good enough, not perfect, is something we talk about in our parent support 4th Trimester groups which are very happily running as hybrid Zoom and in person sessions (www.4thtrimester.org.uk) and are still free to join.

I'm learning a lot at the moment.
We've recently deregistered my 14 year old daughter from school to home educate. It's wonderful, but a big learning curve for us all.
We're also putting the house on the market imminently.

I was restless last night. Despite being tired and happy I kept waking a lot. Just a lot going on in my head. After a few times of getting up and trying different things to help myself settle, my husband checked with me if I was ok. I was able to communicate with him that I was fine, just waking a lot and needing more than usual to get back to sleep. But just the act of him checking in on me made me more relaxed and able to settle. (As well as the other stuff I'd be trying I assume)

I was able to understand, communicate and tend to a lot of my own needs.
Babies cannot. They rely completely upon us to try and understand and meet their needs. As they get older they gradually, in their own time, start to be able to understand and meet some of their own needs.
For some that might be while they're only a few months old, for others and perhaps most, it won't be until well into toddlerhood and beyond. And even then some nights will be different to others.

Don't ever worry about responding to your little one at night. It's what they need and you're doing amazingly. I'm not suggesting it's easy by the way, it can be enormously hard and can affect you physically and mentally in all areas of your life. But I find it's made *even* harder by society telling us we shouldn't be responding. So I'm here to say, you're doing just great. Hang in there, you're awesome.

Thank you Iiona for sharing your story.
Baby not quite a week old.
Congratulations 🥰🥳🥰

This was my 3rd baby and 3rd homebirth.
Being a midwife and knowing about wait for white we've always waited until the cord stops pulsating before cutting the cord.
It's such a special time to have those first cuddles and feed. Definitely worth the wait.

A fabric womb made by Angélique du Coudray, a French midwife who was commissioned by King Louis XV to reduce infant mortality. From 1760 to 1783, she traveled all over France, visiting poor rural women and sharing her extensive knowledge with them. It is estimated that she trained some 10,000 women.
Du Coudray also invented the first lifesize obstetrical mannequin, for practicing mock births, and published a well-received midwifery textbook
