A very special service yesterday for a lady called Shirl.

Some services stay with you.

Yesterday I had the privilege of leading the service for Shirl, and it was one of those moments that quietly reminds you what really matters in life.

What stood out most in the stories shared was love — especially the love that surrounded her in the last eight years of her life, which her family say were the very best years she had.

Those years weren’t about grand events or dramatic moments. They were about the quiet things that make life meaningful — feeling safe, being understood, sharing laughter, going for ice cream, cosy blankets, little yellow gifts, car trips, and the comfort of knowing you belong.

The bond between Shirl and her sister Carole was something truly special. Carole was always there for her, and Shirl held her very close in her heart. Alongside Carole was Chris, whose steady support and kindness over many years meant so much to them both.

We also heard about the wonderful support Shirl received from her carers — affectionately known as the Three Maggies — whose kindness, patience and friendship made such a difference to her life.

Shirl passed away peacefully on Tuesday 17th February, surrounded by the love that made the last eight years of her life so special.

It was an honour to help tell her story yesterday, and my thanks go to Nick and the team at Hexham Co-op Funeralcare for their care and professionalism in supporting Shirl’s family.

Some goodbyes are heavy, but yesterday was filled with love. 💛

Shirl’s story was told with love, and that love will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew her best. 💛
