Breathing Pattern Disorders and Their Impact on Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common chronic issues today — and often, the root cause is missed.
One overlooked contributor? .... Breathing Pattern Disorders (BPD).
BPDs, like chronic over-breathing or hyperventilation, occur when we breathe more than our body’s metabolic needs. This leads to low carbon dioxide levels (hypocapnia), setting off a cascade of problems:
⚠️ Increased muscle tension
⚠️ Heightened pain sensitivity
⚠️ Disrupted spinal stability
The lumbopelvic region — your lower back and pelvis — is especially vulnerable.
The diaphragm plays a key role in stabilising the spine, and when breathing is dysfunctional, the diaphragm can’t do its job. The result? Instability, pain, and further breathing disruption — a vicious cycle.
🔬 Research shows:
🌀 People with back pain often brace their diaphragm and abs, leading to shallow, inefficient breathing
🌀 Over-breathing can trigger respiratory alkalosis and reduce oxygen delivery to tissues (Bohr effect), increasing tension and spasms
🔍 Common signs of BPD:
- Frequent sighing or yawning
- Rapid, shallow breathing
- Overuse of chest and neck muscles
- Low breath-hold time (check your BOLT score)
The good news?
Breathing re-education works. By slowing the breath, engaging the diaphragm, and restoring CO₂ balance, you can reduce pain, improve spinal function, and regain control.
Even moderate, chronic low back pain has been shown to improve significantly with targeted breathing exercises.
