A topical post for the past week! A foot condition that we see more commonly at this time of year.. ❄👣
Chilblains
What are chilblains?
They are localised lesions which affect areas of skin more vulnerable to cold
exposure, such as fingers, nose, ears and commonly, toes. They are small and red
(and sometimes purple), and can be itchy and painful.
Causes
Chilblains are an abnormal reaction to cold, tiny blood vessels under the skin
constrict under cold conditions and when the skin warms up again there can be
leakage of fluid to surrounding tissue. People with poor circulation and other health
problems affecting blood vessels are more prone. Damp and draughty conditions,
hormonal imbalance and dietary factors can increase risk.
How to treat them
Firstly, do not scratch them! Instead use a soothing lotion such as witch hazel and
calamine to reduce the discomfort. There are several products for this so check with
your pharmacist what is available. Chilblains can ulcerate, and it is especially
important to get this checked and treat if you have poor circulation or are diabetic.
How to prevent them
Try to keep warm, not just your feet but your whole body. Avoid rapid warming of
extremities when cold, such as putting under warm water, rapid heat at a fire or hot
water bottles.
