A warm Heilendi welcome to Dr Ben Jesse

We’re pleased to introduce Dr Ben Jesse, our new GPST3, who will be with us for the next 12 months as he completes his final year of GP training.

Dr Jesse is a fully qualified doctor and brings a range of experience from hospital specialties, most recently at The Balfour.

You may be offered an appointment with Dr Jesse during this time, working under the supervision of one of our GPs.

Supporting GP trainees and medical students is an important part of what we do, and we’re very grateful for your ongoing support.

If you see Dr Jesse around, please do say hello and give him a warm Heilendi welcome 😊

Our colleagues at Nordhaven Clinic are currently trialling a postal STI testing service for people living anywhere in Orkney. If you’d like routine screening for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, you can now request a test kit to be sent to your home.

⬇️ See the post below for details on how to request a kit.

🚶‍♀️ National Walking Day

As spring starts to show itself, it’s a lovely time to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air.

Walking (or wheeling) is one of the simplest ways to support your health, helping both body and mind.

🌿 It doesn’t have to be a big walk
☕ It could be a short stroll, a catch-up with a friend, or a bit of time to yourself
🛍 Even a trip to the shops counts

However it looks for you, it all adds up.

A little movement each day can make a big difference.

Looking for a gentle way to get started?
Local Health Walks are short, friendly, and led by trained walk leaders — open to everyone and free to join.

March is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer often has no symptoms early on, so awareness is key.

Book and appointment to get checked if you notice:
🌙 Needing to p*e more often (especially at night)
🚽 Difficulty p*eing or weak flow
⚠️ Feeling like your bladder isn’t fully empty

These symptoms aren’t always serious, but it’s important to speak to your GP.
You can also ask about a PSA blood test, especially if you’re over 50 or have a family history.

For local support, follow Orkney Prostate Awareness

Don’t forget — the clocks go forward on Sunday as British Summer Time begins.
Lighter evenings are on the way!

A few gentle reminders:
💊 Take medication at the usual new time
💤 Try heading to bed slightly earlier the night before
📅 Check any appointment times

A small shift can make you feel a bit off for a few days — especially little ones. Be patient with yourself and your sleep routine.

Here’s to brighter days ahead 🌿

😊 International Day of Happiness
It’s International Day of Happiness — which sounds like a lot of pressure, doesn’t it?

But happiness doesn’t have to be big or dramatic.

It might just be a brighter evening 🌅
A quick hello in the street 👋
A cuppa in peace ☕
Small things count.

And if things don’t feel especially happy right now, that’s okay too. If you need a bit of extra support, you can find trusted wellbeing information on our website: https://heilendipractice.co.uk/health-information/

However today feels for you, we hope there’s at least one small good moment in it 💙

🌸 Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day can bring many different feelings.

For some, it’s a joyful day with little ones and family around the table.
For new mums, it can be beautiful — and exhausting.
For others, it may bring grief, longing, or quiet reflection.
And for some, it’s a reminder of a different path chosen.

Whatever this day means for you, we’re thinking of you.

If you’re a new mum needing feeding support, struggling with sleep, feeling overwhelmed, or worried about your recovery — please reach out.

If you’re navigating loss, fertility challenges, or your mental health feels heavier than usual, support is available.

You don’t have to carry it alone.

You can find trusted health information and ways to contact us via our website: https://heilendipractice.co.uk/

Be gentle with yourself today 🌿
