With snowy and icy conditions across Orkney, getting out and about, or reaching the surgery, may be more difficult for some people.

If your health concern is non-urgent, there’s lots of trusted advice and support available online to help you decide what to do next: https://www.nhsinform.scot/

These services can help you manage symptoms at home and understand when medical care is needed.

📞 We are now returning to normal service but please bear with us as we catch up on rescheduled workload due to the snowy conditions.
🚑 As always, in an emergency, call 999.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during the winter weather, and please take extra care in the snow.

As we get ready to welcome 2026, here’s a gentle reminder to look after yourself and others while celebrating.

✨ Enjoy the celebrations, but:
🚗 Plan ahead if you’re travelling — don’t drink and drive
🍾 Go steady with alcohol — and drink plenty of water too
🎇 Keep fireworks safe and legal — and never return to a lit firework
👫 Look out for friends, neighbours and anyone spending Hogmanay alone
🧥 Wrap up warm — Orkney weather can be wild this time of year!

Wishing everyone a joyful, safe, and healthy start to 2026

The holidays are a time to relax and enjoy, but it’s also important to look after yourself amidst the mince pies and merrymaking!

Here are a few gentle reminders to help you feel your best over the festive season:

✨ Stay active – even a brisk walk can help clear your head and lift your mood
🥦 Keep a balance – enjoy your treats, but don’t forget your veggies!
💧 Drink water – keep hydrated, especially if you’re enjoying a festive tipple
😴 Rest well – busy days mean good sleep matters more than ever
🧣 Wrap up warm – especially if you’re out and about in Orkney’s wild winter weather
💙 Look after your mental health – the holidays can be tough for some; check in with yourself and others

Wishing you a safe, healthy and happy festive season from all of us at Heilendi Practice!

As the days get shorter and the weather turns colder, it can be tempting to hunker down indoors — but getting outside (even just for a short walk) can do wonders for your mood, energy and wellbeing.

Here in Orkney, we’re lucky to be surrounded by wide skies, coastal paths and peaceful landscapes — the perfect place to walk off the winter blues.

🚶‍♀️ A short stroll can help:
🧠 Clear your head
💙 Boost your mood
🌞 Make the most of limited daylight
💪 Support your immune system and circulation

As we approach the shortest day of the year, try to build in little bursts of fresh air and movement where you can — your body and mind will thank you.
