As we prepare to end 2025 with slightly fewer babies born in Orkney than usual — just 100 this year so far (with only 4.5 hours to go!)

Our 100th baby was an extra-special arrival for the Maternity Team. One of our own lovely midwives, Emma, and her partner Graeme welcomed their beautiful son, Cohen David Erik Stout, on 17th December at 07:27, weighing 6lb 15oz & was a truly perfect way to round off the year ⭐️ 💙 💫

The most popular names for Orkney’s newborn babies in 2025 have been shared by our Registrar Service 😍.

In total, 150 babies – 74 boys and 76 girls – were registered with the service between 1 January – 24 December 2025. This compares to 146 in 2024.

Finlay or Finley was the most popular name for a peedie boy with three being registered in the past year, followed by two each for Alfie, Archie, Ben, Freddie, George, Magnus and Vinnie.

The name favoured by parents for girls was Hailey or Freya/Freyja each registered three times. This was followed by a host of names – Ava, Eilidh, Evie, Maisie, Sigrid, Ella, Lyra and Sophie - with two babies each being given these names.

We are hugely appreciative to all you wonderful knitters who very kindly donate your beautiful hats to our ward.
We are in the very lucky position at the moment that our cupboards are bulging and we have run out of room to store anymore!
Thank you to everyone for your donations and we will be sure to put the word out when our stores are starting to depreciate.

Great news, the infant feeding support group will still be on over the holidays, that’s Monday 22nd and Monday 29th. Join us for a cuppa. ☕️

There will be NO group walks on Wednesdays until the 7th January.
