World Hearing Day!! 📣

Every year the World Health Organization runs a themed a campaign aimed at raising awareness of the importance of hearing health care for all. 👂

This year the theme is:
From communities to classrooms: hearing care for every child. 🚸

Whilst our clinics specialise in adult hearing care, we still advocate for accessible hearing care for children and believe it is important to address hearing loss early on.

👂Around 90 million children aged 5-19 years live with hearing loss

👂Over 60% of childhood hearing loss is preventable through public health measures

👂Integrating screening into school health plans can improve outcomes for children with ear or hearing problems

Today we would like to raise awareness of the importance of hearing care, ensuring no child is left behind due to undetected or untreated hearing loss. 💕

For more about childhood hearing loss the World Health Organization website offers a range of tools from handbooks promoting safe listening, to videos on topics related to ear and hearing care for young children.

Tinnitus and Music

Recent studies have revealed a strong link between exposure to loud music and tinnitus. Whether heard live, through headphones or speakers the risk is present. 🎶

Try to remember the 60/60 rule: 🎧never have your volume louder than 60% and try to take a break from listening through headphones every 60 minutes.

All sounds beyond a certain level should be protected against. Anything above 80dB has a safe listening length unprotected and over 140dB should be always protected against.

Earplugs are an essential tool in helping to prevent hearing loss and tinnitus in loud environments. There are a range of options to suit the listening environment.

Tinnitus

The most widely referred to definition of tinnitus is “the perception of sound in the ears and/or head with no external sound source”.

Tinnitus is a very individual condition; from the way that it sounds to how often it is heard:

👂Tinnitus is commonly described as a ringing, whistling, hissing, buzzing or whooshing
sound.
👂It can be heard in one ear, both ears and in the head or neck.
👂Tinnitus can be constant or intermittent.
👂Some find Tinnitus noticeable at a particular time of the day, when going to bed or in a noisy environment for example.
