This is wonderful. I'm so happy that there's a greater understanding around what horses need to feel content and safe. If they have friends, forage and freedom I dont think they need much more! π β€οΈ
Myth: βHorses Need Training to Feel Fulfilledβ
Truth: Horses feel fulfilled when they are safe, respected, and allowed to express themselves.
Letβs reframe what fulfillment looks likeβfor the horse, not the human.
Yes, training can offer stimulation. But so can:
π΄ Grazing freely with companions
π΄ Exploring a new patch of land
π΄ Engaging in play without prompts
π΄ Expressing curiosity or stillness without being redirected
Training often tells the horse who to become.
But what if fulfillment came from being free to already be who they are?
β¨ What if the deepest sense of contentment for a horse isnβt obedience, but sovereignty?
β¨ What if we stopped measuring their joy by how well they perform for us?
Autonomous Horsemanship invites us to trust that horses, like all beings, flourish when they are allowed to beβnot just do.
When we stop asking, βHow can I use training to give my horse a good life?β
And start asking, βWhat does a good life look like for a horseβon their own terms?β
βwe begin to co-create a world where fulfillment is mutual.
