Dementia can make it tough to talk about the future.

As the condition progresses, people with dementia are likely to need support. This could include having someone who can help manage their finances, arrange care or make medical decisions on their behalf.

It can be difficult to think and talk about these things. Some people find it reassuring, while others would rather not think about it. Everyone is different.

But there can be real benefits to having these conversations, even when theyโ€™re not easy.

Talking about the personโ€™s wishes through to the end of their life can help family, friends, and medical professionals understand and respect those wishes.

It can also help give back a feeling of control at what can be an uncertain time.

Itโ€™s also worth remembering that some legal steps, like making a will or setting up lasting power of attorney, require the person to have the ability (known as mental capacity) to make those decisions. So itโ€™s a good idea to have a discussion about these early after diagnosis, if you can.

Hereโ€™s our advice for how to have this conversation.

And if you have any other tips from your own experience, make sure to share them in the comments.

๐Ÿคข๐Ÿ’ฉ Caught norovirus? - here's our quick guide on what to do to help you feel better and prevent it from spreading to others.

TREATING NOROVIRUS

๐Ÿ”น take paracetamol for any fever or aches and pains
๐Ÿ”น get plenty of rest
๐Ÿ”น use special rehydration drinks if you have signs of dehydration, such as a dry mouth or dark urine. These are available in community pharmacies

Norovirus can be very unpleasant but usually clears up by itself in a few days. You can normally look after yourself or your child at home.

โš ๏ธAvoid going to your GP, as norovirus can spread to others very easily.

๐Ÿ“ฑPhone your GP practice or NHS 24 on 111 if youโ€™re concerned or need advice.

PREVENTING THE SPREAD

๐Ÿ”น stay off work or school until at least 48 hours after the norovirus symptoms have stopped
๐Ÿ”น avoid visiting anyone in hospital during this time
๐Ÿ”น wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water particularly after using the toilet and before preparing or handling food
๐Ÿ”น be aware alcohol-based hand gels donโ€™t kill the virus
๐Ÿ”น disinfect any surfaces or objects that could be contaminated, using a bleach-based household cleaner.
๐Ÿ”น wash any items of clothing or bedding that could have become contaminated separately on a hot wash (60ยฐC)
๐Ÿ”น do not share towels and flannels
๐Ÿ”น flush any poo or vomit in the toilet and clean the surrounding area with a bleach-based household cleaner
๐Ÿ”น avoid eating raw, unwashed food
๐Ÿ”น only eat oysters from a reliable source as they can carry norovirus

Remember norovirus spreads very easily in public places such as hospitals, nursing homes and schools. Follow our hygiene tips above to prevent the virus from spreading further!

We need your help...

Do you have a blood pressure monitor belonging to the surgery that is on loan to you and you have completed your measurements?

If you do, please can you return it as soon as you are able as we are running low.

The knock on effect is that patients are waiting for a monitor and a delay could prevent patients starting high blood pressure medication.

If you are keen to buy your own meter we would suggest the Omron M2, which is currently available for just under ยฃ20 from Argos (excluding delivery).
