Pain isn’t one-size-fits-all and knowing the type you have could be the key to recovery. Pain education is evolving fast fortunately and having a better understanding of broad categories of pain can be very useful. These are discussions I have every week!
🔍 3 Types of Pain:
1️⃣ Nociceptive Pain — injury/tissue damage. Your body’s alarm system.
2️⃣ Neuropathic Pain — nerve damage/disease.
3️⃣ Neuroplastic Pain — brain-generated pain with no active injury (most chronic pain falls here and can improve with a mind-body approach).
💡 Many people chase physical treatments for years… when their pain is actually neuroplastic.

Hello! Lots of my clients tell me they'll get round to doing more exercise or more movement (and I'm currently guilty of not doing enough!). We put too much pressure on ourselves to wait for the “right” moment. The perfect plan. The perfect mindset.
This is a trap! Most of the time, you won’t feel ready. You’ll feel tired. A little unmotivated. Too much on right now! That’s not a flaw; that’s just being human.
You’re allowed to start where you are.
Never wait to be motivated because the emotion will follow the action!

The greatest threat to your joints isn’t movement—it’s stillness.

Cartilage needs load. Muscles need tension. Bones need impact.
I’ve seen what happens when people stop.

Pain increases. Confidence fades. Recovery becomes harder. Your world becomes smaller.

Motion isn’t just medicine—it’s prevention. Motion is lotion!

Start with 10 minutes. Make it a habit.

Your future self is waiting. Let’s move like it matters. Because it does. Thanks Dr Luks for the reminder!

CRACK! The Science Behind That Satisfying Sound 💥

Loads of clients ask me to crack their back with the thought that their joints are out of place! This isn't the case, there is no misalignment and there are no joints out of place (this is TOTAL nonsense!). So what's REALLY happening when your joints pop?

That unmistakable crack isn’t bones rubbing together—it’s gas cavitation! When a joint is stretched or manipulated, the synovial fluid inside rapidly changes in pressure, creating a gas bubble. As it collapses, the result is an audible release—like a tiny internal thunderclap! ⚡

But here’s the truth: the sound alone doesn’t mean the technique was effective. The pop is just a by-product of pressure changes—it tells us nothing about joint function, mobility, or pain relief.

Chasing the crack isn’t clinically relevant—what matters is the outcome, not the noise!

Modern research shows that spinal manipulation can optimize joint mobility, reduce tension, and modulate pain perception—even without an audible release. So, while the sound might be satisfying, the real magic is in the movement!

Who loves that feeling? 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ thanks to OMT for their great research!

Who's coming to Heal Scotland's Wild Medicine Festival on Skye next weekend? There will be as ever, some great sessions and the focus is how we can work both individually and collectively to improve the nation's health by taking more self responsibility. I'm looking forward to running a session on how we understand pain how we can manage our "threat buckets" and how we are not "broken". Physical and emotional pain are inextricably linked and the brain ultimately prioritises our sensations of pain. Pain science fortunately develops year on year and we now know that whilst extremely complex, the neuroplasticity (changeability) of the brain gives us real hope that we can also "unlearn pain" and that for example only 1% of back pain is a medical emergency. Health professionals have a huge responsibility to use helpful and hopeful (not unrealistic) narratives to reassure clients/patients. When I hear fearful stories of clients being told they have "a crumbling spine" or their "back's have gone" or they have an "anterior pelvic tilt" and this is the cause of their pain, I spend a lot of time to reassure that none of these sorts of statements are true. Please know that we are strong and resilient and our injuries repair.

Auriculotherapy: An innovative solution for migraines? 🔍

📋 A clinical trial conducted at the Foch Hospital in France, involving 90 women suffering from migraines, is investigating a promising approach: auriculotherapy with SEDATELEC’s ® semi-permanent needles. With 15% of the French adult population affected by migraine, this non-pharmacological method could provide significant relief. The evaluation protocol for this acupuncture technique has been validated by the WHO. Preliminary results show a reduction in the use of medication and an improvement in the patients' quality of life compared with the control group.

A big thank you to Mireille Cherqui and her team, for leading this project and helping Auricular Acupuncture find its place!

Thank you Stefanie Cochet for sharing.
