A great day of learning at Athena Care Homes! 👏

Our Central Office team all took part in Basic Life Saving Skills training today, learning:
✔️ DRSABC
✔️ How to use a defibrillator
✔️ What to do if someone is choking
✔️ Basic first aid for burns and cuts

These are skills that can make a real difference, not just in the office or our homes, but in everyday life too 💙

💙Community, kindness and coming together 💙

Alex Wood House Care Home was proud to support the Cambridge Acorn Project by hosting a community bingo fundraiser as part of The Big Give.

Thanks to the generosity of our guests and local businesses, we raised £377.90 to support children and families affected by trauma and hardship across Cambridge.

At Athena Care Homes, we believe in making moments together and being there for one another — and this event truly reflected that spirit.

This afternoon, the Year 5 children from St Catherine of Siena School in Garston, Hertfordshire, brought lots of festive cheer to our care home residents and team members via a Teams call.

Organised and guided by their teacher, Miss Hannah Wales, the children treated us to a wonderful selection of Christmas songs, including a beautiful rendition of Feliz Navidad, complete with actions!

Our residents thoroughly enjoyed the performance and couldn’t resist joining in with the lyrics. A truly joyful afternoon for everyone involved 🎄🎶

A Fairy tale Christmas at Avocet Court!🎄❤️

We are thrilled to share that Avocet Court has been recognised by Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden at Heart Radio as a winner of the Make Someone’s Christmas Special competition!

Our amazing Home Manager Ruth Garnham and Clinical Deputy Manager, Nina, nominated the team for their dedication, not just throughout the year, but especially at Christmas. From magical decorations to our much-loved Christmas light trail, our staff always go above and beyond to bring joy to our residents. 🎅

To celebrate, Heart Radio surprised us with a visit from the iconic Coca-Cola Christmas truck and carol singers! 🚚🎉

Residents and staff alike enjoyed a truly unforgettable festive moment.

What an incredible day at the Athena VIP – Value in People Awards! 🤩

Teams from all seven care homes, our central office, and regional teams gathered yesterday at the Cambridge Belfry Hotel and Spa, dressed to impress, for our first-ever daytime awards celebration.

Thirteen awards were presented, from “Living the Athena Values” to “Best Whole Home Approach,” honouring the amazing individuals and teams who bring our values to life every day and provide truly authentic care to our residents.

A huge thank you to our event sponsors, Creed – The Food Service Company, Able Cleaning and Hygiene Supplies Ltd, and Kings Butchers, for supporting and joining us in the celebrations.

We had such a joyful day at Ashlynn Grange as we hosted our very first danceSing session! 💛

Residents enjoyed singing, music, gentle movement, and plenty of laughter. The danceSing team created a beautiful experience that supported wellbeing and encouraged self-expression and connection.

One of the best parts? Our whole team got involved! Carers, night staff, the lifestyle team, our gardener and maintenance staff all joined residents in the fun - a perfect example of the community spirit we’re so proud of at Ashlynn Grange.

A huge thank you to Peasgood & Skeates for inviting us to their wonderful “Dance to Remember” event! 💃🕺
On Thursday 13th November, our Langdon House residents headed down to the church hall and enjoyed a fabulous 1940s-themed tea dance held in remembrance. ✨
We are so grateful to Peasgood and Skeates for including us, and an extra special thank you to May Blossom for her incredible performance, our residents absolutely loved it! 🎶🌸
I also want to give a heartfelt shout-out to the Langdon House team for pulling together and helping us get 19 residents to the event, this would not have been possible without your dedication and teamwork. 🙌💜
A special mention to Lance George, who made multiple trips transporting residents with wheelchairs. Your effort truly made a difference. 🦽💜
We were also delighted to have ITV join us — and our very own Peggy Cowell was interviewed! 🎤📺

Alex Wood House invites you to join us on Saturday 22nd November between 2.00 and 4.00pm at The Church of the Good Shepherd in Arbury, for an afternoon of fundraising and refreshments, all in aid of The Cambridge Acorn Project.

The Cambridge Acorn Project has been supporting local children and families affected by trauma, abuse and financial hardship for the last decade. During this time, they have helped to positively change the lives of thousands of children and their families.

Trauma can steal opportunities from children. They believe that things can be different and that families should have access to support in a way that is meaningful to them. They believe strongly in the need for individual choice, and they provide a range of services and approaches which respond to individual circumstances.
