More testing of shoulder strength today. A huge difference in strength between left and right sides. Some more rehab required to create symmetry and reduce injury risk.

Over Striding is a common running characteristic that we see with runners. Over stride is a term used when the ankle is ahead of the knee at heel strike. It is a common adaptation in runners with inadequate hip extension. Unfortunately, over striding can place increased demand on certain body areas and increase injury risk for issues such as pain at the front of the knee, Hamstring strains and Shin splints.

Below is a fantastic review from one of our Running Screen and Gait Analysis clients: Andy is a 55 year old runner who runs 3 times per week between 5-10km and was struggling with some knee pain while he ran.

"Before booking my running screen and gait analysis at Fairway Physio, I’d been struggling with a recurring ache in my right knee that tended to flare up whenever my mileage increased. It wasn’t bad enough to stop me running completely, but it was always there in the background and made me hesitant to push my training. I’d previously been told (by Google) to “just strengthen my legs,” but I never really understood why the issue kept coming back.

From the moment I arrived, the session felt very professional but relaxed. The assessment was thorough and clearly structured, and I felt like the focus was genuinely on understanding how I run rather than just where it hurt. What stood out most was how clearly everything was explained. Seeing the slow-motion video of my running gait and having it broken down in simple terms made a huge difference. I was surprised to learn how much my hip control and foot mechanics were contributing to the load on my knee, something I’d never considered before.

The feedback I received was clear, specific, and easy to understand. Rather than being overwhelmed with information, I left with a much better understanding of why the problem had developed and what I could realistically do about it. The exercises and changes suggested felt relevant to me and my running, rather than generic rehab advice.

Since the session, I’ve made a few targeted changes to my strength work and have been more aware of how I move when running. The knee discomfort has noticeably reduced while running to the point that I hardly notice it, and I feel far more confident increasing my mileage again. Even more importantly, I now feel like I understand my body better and know what to look out for in the future. I feel that if I continue with the advice and exercises provided, I will be running pain free in no time.

The most valuable part of the running screen for me was the clarity it gave me. It didn’t just tell me that something was wrong, it explained why and gave me a clear plan to address it. I think this type of assessment would benefit any runner, whether they’re dealing with an injury, trying to prevent one, or simply wanting to run more efficiently.

I would absolutely recommend Fairway Physio’s running screen and gait analysis to other runners. It’s reassuring to know that you’re not guessing or Googling solutions, but instead getting expert, personalised advice based on how you actually run". (Andy)

We look forward to seeing you soon.

🏃‍♂️ Are You Overstriding When You Run?

Overstriding happens when your foot lands too far in front of your body while running. Instead of landing under your hips, your leg reaches out in front often with a straighter knee and a heel-first contact.

This creates a braking force with every step, increasing impact through your joints and soft tissues. While a heel contact is normal for most runners, overstriding can prove problematic for some.

🚩 Common Problems Linked to Overstriding:

• Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)
• Runner’s knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome)
• IT band pain (iliotibial band syndrome)
• Hamstring strains
• Hip flexor tightness
• Increased risk of stress fractures

Over time, that repeated braking force can overload your knees, hips, and lower legs especially if you’ve recently increased mileage or speed.

👩‍⚕️ How Seeing a Physio Can Help

If you suspect overstriding is contributing to aches or injuries, here are 3 ways a physiotherapist can help:

1️⃣ Gait Analysis

A physio can assess your running form (often via video analysis) to identify whether you’re overstriding and what’s driving it eg. cadence, hip control, ankle stiffness, etc.

2️⃣ Strength & Control Work

Weak glutes, poor core control, or limited ankle mobility often contribute to overstriding. A targeted strength programme can improve stride efficiency and reduce braking forces.

3️⃣ Cadence & Technique Coaching

Small changes like slightly increasing cadence (step rate) can naturally shorten your stride and reduce joint loading. A physio can guide you safely through these changes without disrupting your training.

Running shouldn’t constantly hurt. Small technique tweaks and the right rehab plan can make a huge difference to performance and injury prevention.

If you’re struggling with recurring niggles, it might be your stride length.

Feel free to share this with a runner who needs to hear it 👇

Fairway Physio Ltd

Fairway Physio Ltd started out in 2014 as a small Saturday clinic based in Halton, Lancaster. Since then we have established ourselves as a leading Physiotherapy and Sports Massage provider in the Morecambe Bay area at Lancaster Golf Club. We now offer Physiotherapy based services to the general public throughout the week and weekends over two premises.

We pride ourselves in the education we provide to our patients, so that everyone who uses our services understands their problem and diagnosis and also knows how to overcome these with the appropriate rehabilitation. From time to time, we run free education evenings on common injuries such as low back pain and shoulder pain amongst others.

When we started our business in Lancaster Golf Club we knew it was important to establish a general physiotherapy and sports injuries clinic that could be accessed by anyone who required it. I think we have done a really good job with this so far and the practice continues to grow and develop.

We have, however, also specialised in golf rehabilitation within the performance centre at Lancaster Golf Club. We provide not only rehabilitation services but also Golf Screening and conditioning programmes for golfers. We have seen amateur golfers playing off of high handicaps and scratch golfers and Professionals improve their physical condition to help their game.
