Research and Development UHMBT

Research and Development UHMBT Research and Development at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust operates across a large geographical footprint.

We actively conduct research at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Furness General Hospital, Westmorland Hospital and Queen Victoria Hospital. Research is essential to help improve current treatments, find new and better ways to treat illnesses and provide better care for patients. Without research we would not have the pioneering and vital medications and treatments that we currently use in health care. At University Hospitals Morecambe Bay Trust, the research team works alongside clinical care teams to improve the quality of patient care, as our patents health and wellbeing is fundamental to us. We operate across a footprint of 4 sites: Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Furness General Hospital, Westmorland General Hospital, and Queen Victoria Hospital. Our Research and Development department hosts a range of innovative research trials and contributes to vital research, used to develop and create new and better treatments and preventative methods. We are proud to support research across the following domains; oncology, rheumatology, respiratory, stroke, Covid19, Diabetes, Gastroenterology as well as various multidisciplinary health service improvement studies. Our studies include researching new medications through drug trials, sample collection trials, observational and data collection trials. Thousands of patients dedicate their time each year to helping support some of the most cutting-edge research available. This means we are able to trial new medications and medical devices with patients who can benefit from them, and provide vital information and treatments for future generations. We work closely with other NHS organisations, our local Universities, local research organisations and collaborate internationally with expert researchers across the world and strive to improve patients healthcare and support NHS and health organisations.

UHMBT R & D have now recruited over five hundred participants to the Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme study (PQIP) ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฅผ๐Ÿฅ

This study is looking at the perioperative care of patients undergoing major non-cardiac surgery, measuring complication rates, failure to rescue and patient-reported outcomes. It hopes to improve patient outcomes across the UK, reducing variation in processes of care and supporting implementation of best practice.

Research Nurse Stephanie has worked on the study since the beginning of 2025. She has enjoyed various aspects, especially โ€œinteracting with patients and following their journey through the preoperative to postoperative period.โ€

Her favourite part of the work is โ€œdelivering research with direct involvement from patients to ultimately enhance patient outcomes after surgery.โ€

She adds that hitting a milestone like this is excellent news for the Trust:

โ€œFrom the data collected we will be able to see how we are performing regionally, which hopefully will lead to established best practices and improved outcomes for our patients.โ€
PQIP has also provided valuable experience to Research Nurse Nadine, who is relatively new to research:

โ€œThe PQIP study has been really good for me to gain experience of the basics of research. Thanks to this study, I have increased by knowledge and my confidence in my ability to perform my duties.โ€

UHMBT R & D want to give a big shout out to the Diverse Specialities Research Team on World Sepsis Day, Sat 13th September 2025. DST work on research studies that help us understand and find new treatments for covid, sepsis, influenza and other forms of critical illness.

Sepsis arises when the bodyโ€™s response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. It may lead to shock, multi-organ failure, and death โ€“ especially if not recognized early and treated promptly.

Research Nurse Nadine is on the Diverse Specialities Team that works on the sepsis studies here at UHMBT. She explains:

โ€œSepsis has been one of the frequent causes of death worldwide (Fleischmann-Struzek C, Rudd K). One of the studies we are supporting is assessing whether there is a difference in the genetic composition of patients who are being cared for in ITU compared to the patients who do not need critical monitoring. Research like this helps us to have an idea on how we will treat sepsis, thus reducing the mortality rate.โ€

Steph, also a Research Nurse, emphasises why ongoing research is still so important in this area:

โ€œSepsis is the number one cause of preventable death in the world. This fact alone highlights the importance of research. We need to understand why this extreme immune response happens in some people. Having first-hand experience of caring for critically ill patients with sepsis, I feel passionate to be involved with our sepsis research which aims to help us better understand and find new treatments for this condition and, ultimately, to improve long-term outcomes for sepsis patients.โ€

Last week our new digital research champions visited the department.

Nicola Metcalfe is one of the trusts digital clinical nurse analysts and Janet Manning is the Chief Nursing information officer. We are excited to have them championing research for us from a digital perspective.

The chief nursing office for England's research strategy promotes a vision for digital capability. So it's great to be working together on the strategy across University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust for developing nurse, midwifery and AHP led digital research and collaborating across research delivery.

Our new head of research Nichola Verstraelen, along with our digital team, are supporting a North West digital research development project under Peter White's leadership (CNIO for Alder Hey hospital). Watch this space for developments across the trust.

A very happy to everyone! ๐Ÿ’Š ๐Ÿฉบ ๐Ÿ“‹

On this day, we acknowledge the tireless work of researchers who dedicate countless hours to discovery and innovation, often behind the scenes.

By highlighting their contributions, Research Appreciation Day encourages continued investment in research and inspires future generations to pursue careers in science and academia. Recognising researchers also fosters a greater public understanding of how evidence-based solutions benefit communities worldwide ๐ŸŒŽ โš—๏ธ ๐Ÿฅผ ๐Ÿงช ๐Ÿ”ฌ
