A Transplant physician with sub special interest in kidney transplantation; living kidney donation and post transplantation care. Dr Ahmed has also interest in advanced kidney disease and the failing kidney transplant. He is the Lead for living kidney donation at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, also has post-transplant follow up clinics, General Nephrology; Glomerulonephritis, CKD, AKI, Dialysis; Peritoneal dialysis and Haemodialysis clinics.
• Dr Ahmed is the Research Lead for Renal for the North West Coast CRN and sits on the UK National Renal Speciality NHIR committee
• Member of the Transplant Clinical Study Group part of the UK Renal Consortium

The Nephrology Department at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals provides a comprehensive regional service for renal medicine for a catchment population of approximately 1.7 million, one of the biggest Renal Centres in the UK. The Royal Preston Hospital has been designated as a renal hub for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals and Morecambe Bay. The Directorate comprises central dialysis hub and 7 satellites dialysis unit dialysis. The total RRT population of 600 patients, in excess of 500 Hospital Haemodialysis patients, 100 patients dialyse at home (APD, CAPD, and Home HD). There is a separate CAPD and Home Haemodialysis training facility at the Chorley and South Ribble Hospital unit. The hub unit in Preston provides:-
• Acute dialysis from the catchment area (Blackpool, East Lancashire, Morecambe Bay and South Lakes)
• Plasma exchange
• A 27-bedded nephrology ward at the Royal Preston Hospital site with acute dialysis facility
• Facilities for renal biopsy and its interpretation and access to LM, EM, immunocytochemistry and immunofluorescence.
• Interventional radiology for renal disease and vascular access.
• Vascular access surgery.
• Medical insertion of Dialysis access and PD catheter access
• Training of Junior doctors and trainees in renal and general medicine, also to International fellows and scholars
• The Department undertakes approximately 250 renal biopsies per year (both native and transplant)
• Approximately 85 on average renal transplants/year and also provides referral for combined pancreatic/renal transplants and islet/pancreas only transplant performed at Manchester Royal Infirmary.
• Patients are transferred back to Preston for follow-up 3-4 weeks post transplant with a present transplant stock of 800 patients
• The Lancashire Kidney Unit is recognised centre for training since 2012 by the ISN and ERA

• I am interested in Medical Education in Nephrology, I supervise overseas clinical fellows (ISN and ERA, others) from developing countries
• I am Educational Renal Ambassador by the ISN and have visited few countries in Eastern Europe, middle East and Centre Asia to teach and train.
• I supervised 10 ISN and ERA Fellows since 2012 from various countries (Egypt, Israel, Sudan, Croatia, Bosnia and Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and Nigeria
• I have twined Preston with Tuzla in Bosnia through the ISN SRCP since 2014 and we have achieved progress from Level C to Level A in 2019/2020.
• I organise 3 key annual UK renal courses based on innovation in teaching and education, 2 courses based on hands-on experience and the third is based on practical clinical cases. The Preston Peritoneal Dialysis catheter insertion course since 2018, The Renal Biopsy Courses since 2012 both courses attract delegates from all over the world with nephrologist from 38 countries over 5 continents coming to Preston. The Applied Nephrology Course which is based on interactive applied cases.
