No judgement ear.

When someone you know is struggling with their mental health it can be difficult to know what to do.

You may feel daunted that you need to have the answers. You do not. Simply by checking in and offering a non-judgemental ear you will be helping.

For them to know there is someone they can trust who will listen is reassuring. The person may feel isolated, that they are carrying this alone. They may also feel discomfort or shame around some of their feelings and circumstances. That is why acknowledging they are having a difficult time and listening without making assumptions will be a comfort.

You may feel upset by what you are hearing, staying calm and letting them speak without interruption will not only give them an outlet but also encourage them reach out again without worrying they are a burden or causing you discomfort.

We hear people say they are trying to be “someone’s therapist”. You would not deliver medical treatment without being qualified, that is why clinical psychologists and psychotherapists undergo many years of training. You can still be a listening ear but could also help them seek out further professional support.

You are being a comfortable armchair they can fall into and offload if needed.

It starts at the root

For people dealing with a mental health challenge, well-being initiatives can feel like a sticking plaster.

It is vital to look after our wellness, but underlying mental health issues also need to be resolved otherwise the initiatives alone can become a bypass, a distraction.

In this post we focus on trauma and quote Peter Levine, “Some things must be dealt with at the roots. Trauma is one of those things”.

Developmental trauma can lead to an inability to solution focus, problem solve which can be costly to the person and the business they work for.

An employee who can self-soothe, self-regulate, is able to be creative, find solutions and grow at a faster rate.

The ability to emotionally process, self-soothe and regulate is key to a sense of self and an asset to any business.

Boys don’t cry…. hmm that old (wrecking ball of a) chestnut!

How many children shamed into not crying have grown into adults that suppress emotion?

The avoidance of emotion can often lead to unhelpful behaviours due to no outlet to process those emotions, or not knowing how to as it has never been taught. Often other unhealthy behaviours are learnt to suppress such as alcohol, drugs, self-harm, and eating orders, to name some.

The statement from the stranger is a statement that has held generations hostage in their emotional body.

We see so many people reach out for mental health support who inherited the unhelpful practice of “put up and shut up”.

Sadly, this is so commonplace and deeply entrenched that we hold concern for the many who have not, and may never, reach out.

This is one of the many reasons we feel compelled to get mental health training in the workplace and make it more accessible to more people.

We will learn to process emotion, how to self-soothe, self-regulate and pass this on to our children.

Communication is key. In every aspect of life.

It is concerning to see that such a high number of people do not feel it is an option, or not one they are comfortable with.

Feedback we have received includes:
❎ The level of training / qualification the contact at work has.
❎ Concerns around confidentiality.
❎ Felt if they spoke up, they would be viewed as a weak link.
❎ The workplace or a colleague is the problem, difficult to speak out.

I want to bang the drum for Human Update.

I am doing this because I experienced a mental health breakdown. I had to stop everything. It was frightening and Human Update was a lifeline.

I want to shout from the rooftops (so along banging a drum I am hopefully making a lot of racket!) about the importance of mental health training, awareness, support, being available to more people.

The whole reason Human Update was set up.

I know with more awareness, signposting, and therefore relevant support, my situation could have been caught upstream.

Wherever you are within your mental health, this knowledge will help you with your forward life journey. To maintain good mental health practices, as you would with your physical health, can only improve your quality of life!

And, if life hits hard, and the snow globe is given an almighty shake, you will feel more equipped or know to reach out.

I am SO grateful for the knowledge and support I have received so far.

Any leap into mental health support can feel like a leap of faith.

Whether it is you as an individual, or you as an employer wishing to care take your team.

It is important that the person who delivers your mental health training is qualified to do so.

Not just academically, but also with the people skills to engage your team, with people experience honed over many years to nuance an approach so that it has genuine impact for all involved.

It is also important that their practice is supervised ongoing, so you are assured you are receiving the best practice of service. Accountability is reassuring and necessary. Especially when mental well being is at the core.

Today is the

A time when we can welcome lighter evenings, the sight of floral colours adding vibrancy to our surroundings, the prospect of better weather and more time outdoors.

For some it can be a real boost to general mood. It can bring a sense of optimism.

It can be an opportunity to make plans to engage more with the outdoors, to ground in nature, and connect with other people.

However, the season change can be a challenge for others, it is important to acknowledge that and to have self-compassion with those feelings. Also, to reach out if you need support.

We have over 20 years’ experience of working with individuals, we see the statistics around mental health, and we feel compelled to reach out to workplaces to help MORE people gain an understanding of themselves and how the brain works.

That is why Human Update was founded.

We care and we want to channel our BABCP accredited knowledge and insights from a vast number of clinical hours to support you, wherever you are in your mental wellness.
