St John's Hospice

St John's Hospice St John's Hospice is a charity. All of our care, compassion and support is offered free of charge to patients and their families or carers.
(374)

St John’s Hospice provides care, compassion and support for patients with life shortening illnesses across the South Lakes, North Lancashire and parts of North Yorkshire. Our care however is not cost free, around a quarter of our funding is from the government and the remaining three-quarters is raised by people like you in our local community. This is why St John's fundraises throughout the year with events, the St John's lottery, monthly giving schemes, wills and our shops so we can be there for one of the most difficult times in people’s lives. Our services include an inpatient ward for end-of-life care as well as pain and symptom management, a Hospice at Home service for people who choose to spend their last time at home and need our support, Clinical Nurse Specialists who support people with planning and pain & symptom management, and a Respite Service for carers of loved ones who need respite time during the day or night. St John's also offers pre and post bereavement support plus other services you may not associate with a Hospice such as Social Workers and Therapists.

💚Thank You Thursday💚

🗻First up... is this the first time St John’s Hospice t-shirt has made it all the way to Everest Base Camp?! A huge thank you and congratulations to Gez Nicholls, a seasoned trekker who has joined us on many Hospice fundraising adventures over the years. This time he took on the challenge solo and has successfully reached Everest Base Camp this week! Gez has already raised over £750 and counting, and we are so grateful for his incredible dedication and continued support of St John's Hospice.

🐦 Thanks to Nicki and the team from The Blossom Bird in Silverdale. They raised £120 on Valentine's Day by making a donation from every sale over £10. We are so grateful for your on-going support!

🍟A big thank to you to Lynne & Jim who recently held their annual ‘Chip Butty Sunday’ event – which is a darts event, involving chip butties – what’s not to love?! They chose to support St John’s Hospice this year with the funds raised on the day, and we were delighted to receive a fantastic £566! Thank you to all involved and to The Black Bull Bentham for hosting.

⭐A huge thank you to Brenda Patching and the wonderful Silverdale Ladies, also lovingly known as the Thrifty Ladies! As one of their designated charities for 2026, they have kindly presented us with a cheque for £1,000. Since 2020 the ladies have raised an amazing £4,296 for St John's Hospice. This is a truly remarkable achievement, fundraise every single week through baking, coffee mornings, and bric‑a‑brac sales - all while bringing their community together! Your ongoing support means so much to us.

🍰Thank you to the Owls Nest pub for bringing their community together in support of our hospice, by hosting a wonderful coffee morning and raising £225.95.

To celebrate what would have been Sister Aine's 99th birthday, Wallings came to St John's Hospice and generously gave out free '99's to our patients, volunteers and staff today! It was lovely to enjoy a moment in the sun and think about the wonderful woman who helped establish St John's 40 years ago. Thank you to Wallings who are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year too!

Today St John’s Hospice celebrates Sister Aine’s 99th birthday anniversary.
Sister Aine was one of the founding leaders of St John’s Hospice. She was a figurehead for many years and an inspiration for many pursued the fulfilment of work and volunteering in palliative and end of life care, at a time when hospice care was new and still being developed. The team today and the community we serve, are forever grateful for her dedication and kindness.

Sister Aine (MBE) 1927 - 1998

Many members of our team, both staff and volunteers have wonderful memories of working alongside Sister Aine. Please share your own memories of her and the early days of St John’s Hospice in the comments.
