St John's Hospice

St John's Hospice St John's Hospice is a charity. All of our care, compassion and support is offered free of charge to patients and their families or carers.
(376)

St John’s Hospice provides care, compassion and support for patients with life shortening illnesses across the South Lakes, North Lancashire and parts of North Yorkshire. Our care however is not cost free, around a quarter of our funding is from the government and the remaining three-quarters is raised by people like you in our local community. This is why St John's fundraises throughout the year

with events, the St John's lottery, monthly giving schemes, wills and our shops so we can be there for one of the most difficult times in people’s lives. Our services include an inpatient ward for end-of-life care as well as pain and symptom management, a Hospice at Home service for people who choose to spend their last time at home and need our support, Clinical Nurse Specialists who support people with planning and pain & symptom management, and a Respite Service for carers of loved ones who need respite time during the day or night. St John's also offers pre and post bereavement support plus other services you may not associate with a Hospice such as Social Workers and Therapists.

Last month's £5,000 lottery rollover is delighted with her win!
"When my phone rang, little did I expect to be the recipient of such great news!! When Toby informed me I had won the lottery rollover I couldn’t believe it! I have had my lottery tickets since 2017 and haven’t ever won anything, so it just goes to show you should hang onto them for however long!
Of course after that my husband and I thought about what a difference the win could make. It enabled us to actually book the holiday we had thought too expensive to consider. We also gave some to grandchildren on their university journey. A special family meal when next we all manage to get together. Not forgetting a donation to St John’s as I admire the hard work everyone does (with very little government funding) to support the patients and relatives of the area. The remainder will be a security blanket, there, if it is needed. It has been a bright beacon at the end of winter, just perfect."
Could YOU be our next St John's Hospice lottery winner? Join the lottery today to be in with a chance! sjhospice.org.uk/lottery 💚

Sometimes volunteers are the face of St John's Hospice, other times they're tucked away behind the scenes. There are incredible people volunteering in all sorts of roles across St John's, like Glenda who helps with volunteer admin - yes, Glenda actually volunteers with our Volunteering team! She said: "Volunteering means the world to me, and I always feel happy when I come for a shift. I do not have a big family so SJH is like my family. Knowing there is always someone I can talk to about anything gives me great comfort. It doesn’t matter what role you do; everyone is treated so well. I feel my life has been enriched by the way I have been able to help and reassure other people about coming to the Hospice." Thank you to all our volunteers; seen and unseen 💚

It is the fourth week of the Charity Challenge and our incredible local businesses are stepping up the creativity!

Let’s have a look at what they’ve been up to this week…

A huge well done to MB Digital and Ratcliffe & Bibby Solicitors, who took on the Hospice Hike last Sunday.

We want to wish good luck to the team at Display Wizard, who are lacing up their boots to take on the hike next Saturday. We’re cheering you on all the way!

Halton Mill: co-working, studios, & event space hosted their brilliant Bean Go event in true British style...bingo with a side of beans on toast! A wonderfully quirky and rather tasty idea.

Better Health Westmorland & Furness brought everyone together with a fabulous lively Family Fun Event!

Thermo Fisher Scientific hosted a fabulous Bingo event, attended by Hannah and Lily. Thank you for the wonderfully warm welcome!

Laurel Bank Care Home - Barchester Healthcare rolled up their sleeves for a car wash, making a splash for the hospice!

💚Thank You Thursday💚

🏌‍♀A huge thank you to Patricia Nicholson, 2025 Lady Captain of Windermere Golf Club for choosing St John’s Hospice as her Charity of the Year. Patricia held various fundraisers throughout the year including a Beat the Pro Challenge, and a huge end of year coffee morning event. Overall £2,332.27 was raised to help local patients and their families – thank you for all your hard work Patricia, and everyone else involved in the fundraising.

🫶A big thank you to Kendal Rotary Club for attending our store collection at Morrisons in Kendal at the weekend. The Rotary members were there with a smile and we so appreciate their support at events such as this. The community of Kendal were just brilliant and donated £252.38 over the day – thank you!

♻ Thank you to Sabine who crochets these lovely sustainable dishcloths, and has kindly donated them to Kirkby Lonsdale Tourist Information and Gift Shop for sale. They have generously chosen St John’s to benefit from the sale of them!

Exciting Moonlight Walk Update! This year’s visit to Lancaster Castle will be like no other🌙

As we celebrate St John’s Hospice 40th Anniversary, we are thrilled to announce we are partnering with Imitating the dog, a Lancaster based arts organisation who specialises in projects using projection technologies. They are proud to be the lead organisation behind the delivery of the extremely popular Light Up Lancaster Festival.

This year, YOU our amazing walkers and supporters get to help shape the experience! We’re inviting you to share a few words about what the hospice means to you. Those words will then be projected onto Lancaster Castle on the night of the walk, welcoming you into the courtyard and creating a truly unforgettable moment 🏰

To mark our Ruby Anniversary edition of the event, the castle will also be illuminated red, creating a striking and meaningful backdrop for this milestone moment

Join in and submit your words here - https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/dxWdaYLHh2 ❤️
