In Loving Memory of Mike Stevens
1960 – 2025
It is with deep sadness that the family of Mike Stevens announce his peaceful passing on 29th May at St Cuthbert’s Hospice, Durham, aged 64.
Mike will be profoundly missed by his beloved sons, Sam and Michael, his devoted partner Kerry, cherished stepsons Kier and Tate and his brother Chris, along with extended family, friends, colleagues and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born and raised on Walney Island, Mike attended North Shore School, where his lifelong love for learning and the outdoors was first kindled. He went on to dedicate much of his life to education, working as a respected Construction Teacher and Lecturer in Further Education colleges across the North West and North East of England. His commitment to teaching was surpassed only by the warmth, humour and authenticity he brought into every classroom and encounter.
Mike was well known for his radiant, electric smile and the joy he spread so effortlessly - lighting up any room he walked into. A passionate lover of the outdoors, Mike grew up camping and canoeing with his father and later pursued adventures including windsurfing, paddleboarding, kite surfing and hiking, especially in his beloved Lake District. These natural spaces were not just landscapes to him, but places of peace, reflection, adventure and exhilaration.
After becoming a father, Mike didn’t leave these interests behind - instead, they became part of his everyday life with his sons, Sam and Michael. He took them with him into the places he knew well; the water, the hills, the woods. Time outside became a quiet constant in their lives. It wasn’t about teaching them lessons or creating special moments—it was just how they spent time together. Mike shared his passion with his sons, and they carry Mike's spirit of adventure with them.
His love of music and community ran just as deep. Mike was a familiar face at local music venues, especially The Pub, where he regularly attended live events and made many lasting friendships. He travelled across the country to music festivals such as Download and Solfest, usually accompanied by Hector, his treasured campervan, The spirit of adventure what defined his life.
Mike lived with courage, compassion and a deep sense of fun. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his memory will be celebrated with gratitude and love.
Mike’s funeral service will be held at Lancaster and Morecambe Crematorium on Thursday, 26th June at 3:30pm.
Following the service, friends and family are warmly invited to a celebration of Mike’s life at The Pub. In keeping with Mike’s wishes, this will be a joyful gathering, complete with live music - a true send off in his memory, reflecting the vibrant spirit with which he lived.
Donations in Mike’s memory can be made to support the invaluable work of the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association, via the funeral director.
