🎄 Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from the Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Team! 🎉

As the festive season fills our homes with joy, it also offers wonderful opportunities to support your child’s speech and language development through fun, everyday moments. Here are a few festive tips to help:

🎅 Christmas Vocabulary: Use Christmas items like ornaments, gifts, or decorations to teach new words (e.g., “star,” “bauble,” “reindeer”). Talk about colours, shapes, and textures to expand their descriptive language (“brown reindeer”, “shiny bauble” etc).

📖 Festive Stories: Read Christmas-themed books together. Pause to ask questions about the story or pictures, such as “What do you think will happen next?” or “Can you find the snowman?”

🎶 Sing Carols & Songs: Songs like “Jingle Bells” or “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” are great for building vocabulary, rhythm, and memory skills. Encourage your child to join in, even if it’s just with gestures or single words. You can pause in the middle of a song to see if your child will either signal for you to start again, or for older children, continue singing the song themselves.

🎁 Playtime Conversations: While unwrapping presents or playing with new toys, talk about what you see, hear, or feel. Try phrases like “Wow, this is a big truck!” or for older children, ask open-ended questions: “What will we build with this?”

🎄 Imaginative Play: Set up a pretend Santa’s workshop or play with a toy nativity set to encourage storytelling, role-play, and sequencing skills.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas 🎄
