Is your child feeling anxious about school?

Most children returned to school last week, and while new classes, friends, and opportunities can be exciting, the reality of a new school year can also bring feelings of worry.

Mia and Kaitlin from our Children and Young People Mental Health Service have created a helpful video for children and families. Itโ€™s full of practical advice to help shrink those back-to-school worries.

In the video, children can learn:
โ€ข How to feel more confident in new places and routines
โ€ข How to ask questions and be brave
โ€ข Grounding techniques to manage anxiety

Parents and carers will also find tips on:
โ€ข Listening and validating childrenโ€™s feelings
โ€ข Modelling confidence at home

Whether itโ€™s schoolwork pressure, social worries, or adjusting to a new routine, itโ€™s important to remind children that mental health matters. If theyโ€™re struggling, encourage them to talk to a parent, teacher or GP. Reaching out is a sign of strength.

As most children return to school this week, we asked Naomi, Team Leader from our Change Talks team, to talk about why routine plays such an important role in mental wellbeing for children and young people.

In her blog she explains how routines contribute to better sleep and help ground developing brains by reducing the mental energy spent on decision making and worrying about what comes next. Routines offer rhythm, predictability, and a sense of safety which reduces stress and anxious feelings. In a world that often feels chaotic and uncertain, having a rough plan for daily life can bring a comforting anchor.

As September unfolds, allow yourself and your family time to find a comfortable pace. Routine is not the enemy of freedom. It provides the scaffolding that allows young people to flourish within a safe and supported framework. Whether your child is five or nineteen, routines can give them the structure they need to grow, explore, and thrive.

๐Ÿ‘ซ The time has come to return to school and this can bring an abundance of emotions for our young people ๐Ÿ˜–๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜จ๐Ÿฅฐโ˜น๐Ÿคจ๐Ÿคฉ
If its your first day of high school or primary school this can be daunting. Here are some top tips to help you manage those strange emotions that will come up -

Organisation - give yourself plenty of time, pack your bag and get everything you need ready the night before. Plan your journey, bus or walking route to relieve stress โฐ๐Ÿ›ด๐Ÿš˜๐ŸšŒ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Sleep - practice a good sleep hygiene routine. Take any distractions out of your room and use calm time to chill out before bed ๐Ÿ˜ด

Diet and fluid- keep hydrated throughout the day. Have breakfast to fuel your body and mind, or even a small snack. ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฅ›๐Ÿฅค

Self care - take warm showers or baths using strong smelling products to ignite or relax your senses ๐Ÿšฟ๐Ÿ›
Allocate some chill and relax time to ease your mind. This could be playing a game, listening to your favourite music, playing an instrument, watching a film, taking part in your favourite hobby or club or just doing something you love like skin or haircare

Socialise - this can be spending time with family or friends, talking to others via phonecalls or text. You never know they may be feeling the same way or could have some great tips and support that could help ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ‘ซ๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ“ฒ

Be kind - not only do you need to be kind to yourself but to others also. Everyone who is at school will feel a certain way some more than others. A friendly smile goes a long way. Who knows it could be the start of a fantastic new future ๐Ÿ˜Š

Most of all have fun, enjoy your first week, share how you feel with a trusted adult at home, in school or anywhere. If you are struggling there is help.
