Know Your Numbers Week: It's Time to Take Control of Your Health!

Have you checked your blood pressure lately? If not, Know Your Numbers Week (September 2-8) is the perfect time to do so! High blood pressure can increase your risk of serious health problems. The good news is that the risk can be reduced and it can be treated, and knowing your numbers is the first step.

You can have your blood pressure checked in your local pharmacy, or at your surgery, in their waiting room or during an NHS Health Check

High blood pressure increases your risk of many health conditions:

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a common condition in which the force of blood against the walls of your arteries is too high. This can damage your arteries over time and increase your risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and eye problems.

High blood pressure can be prevented and treated:

High blood can be prevented with simple steps:
Reduce your salt and sugar intake.
Eat more fruits and vegetables and less highly processed food – especially junk food.
Avoid to***co and alcohol.
Keep fit, active and maintain a healthy BMI.

For many people, these lifestyle changes are sufficient to control blood pressure. Hypertension can also be treated with safe and well tolerated medications.

As you age, you may experience changes in your body that can contribute to high blood pressure, such as stiffening of the blood vessels, decreased kidney function, hormonal changes, weight gain and decreased physical activity.

If you are aged 40 to 74 – and do not have an existing condition such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease or dementia – you are eligible for a free NHS Health Check every five years. The health check will assess your risk of developing these conditions and offer personalised advice on lifestyle changes and interventions to help prevent or manage them.

If you have African, Caribbean or South Asian heritage, you may be at a higher risk of developing high blood pressure. Genetic and lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity can all play a part. If you are aged 40 or over, make sure to get your NHS health check at your GP surgery.

If you have a learning disability and/or autism you may be at a higher risk of high blood pressure. Being overweight and having health conditions such as diabetes also increases your risk. If you are aged 14, or over, and on your doctor's learning disability register, you can have a free health check once a year. This will help you get the support you need to stay healthy. Check with your doctor's practice if you or the person you care for is on the register.

Ball Tree Surgery

Car Park closure on Western Road North site in place until end September 2025.

Due to building works, the car park at the Western Road site will be closed to allow for the installation of additional clinical rooms. We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause as unfortunately there is no other option.

Please can we ask those who need to attend the surgery to use nearby free on street parking and not to use the car park for our neighbours at Ball Tree Croft. Please also do not park on the access road as this prevents access for ambulances.

During this work we have had instances of violence and aggression from people towards our team members and the staff at Ball Tree Croft. Please note CCTV is in operation and we will report any such instances to Sussex Police.

There continues to be limited parking at our Kingfisher Branch in Culver Road. Where possible, we will aim to see people at that location during the building works if they have particular access needs.

We look forward to having some additional space to support our patients later in the Summer.

Additional Clinical Space at Ball Tree Surgery!

Coming later in the Spring there will be additional clinical space at Ball Tree Surgery.
We will have 2 additional consulting rooms and a new patient lavatory with improved accessibility.

Construction works are beginning at the end of January and will continue through to March.

To protect your safety the car park will be closed when significant works are taking place.

We apologise for the inconvenience that this will cause.

There is free on street parking on Western Road North and in nearby streets.

Sadly, due to the works we have lost the larger trees in our car park.

We are working alongside the Sustainable Sussex Charity and their Fen Farm project locally and many new trees have been planted on their site, many along the route of a new nature walk which will be developed over the coming months.

The additional trees and the environmental improvement work that is being supported by the project leaders and local volunteers will we hope off-set the loss of our trees.

This excellent project, which has been directly benefitting our patients and our local community, has recently been subject to some very serious vandalism. If you can help them with donations to help restore the losses and help, put in additional security to prevent future vandalism it would be very welcome.

Upcoming Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training from West Sussex Mind

Mental Health First Aid is a training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

Our Mental Health First Aid courses are delivered by a Mental Health First Aid England trainer in association with West Sussex Mind.

Youth Mental Health First Aid courses are for everyone who works with, lives with or supports young people aged 8 to 18. They will teach you the skills and confidence to spot the signs of mental health issues in a young person, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need. In doing so, you can speed up a young person’s recovery and stop a mental health issue from getting worse.

This YMHFA course consists of two in person sessions with a qualified course instructor as follows:

Session 1: Thursday 10th April - 9:00 - 17:00
Session 2: Thursday 17th April - 9:00 - 17:00

Both sessions will be held at:
West Sussex Mind, The Gateway, 8 - 10 Durrington Lane, Worthing BN13 2QG

You will need to attend both sessions for the full duration to complete the course. There will not be an opportunity to catch up on anything that has been missed.

We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. Mental ill health can strike at any time and can affect everyone.

Our MHFA courses won’t teach you to be a therapist, but they will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening. You’ll learn to recognise warning signs of mental ill health and develop the skills and confidence to approach and support someone while keeping yourself safe.

This AMHFA course consists of four online sessions with a qualified course instructor as follows:

Session 1: Monday 21st April, 9am - 1pm
Session 2: Tuesday 22nd April, 9am - 1pm
Session 3: Monday 28th April, 9am - 1pm
Session 4: Tuesday 29th April, 9am - 1pm

You will need to attend all sessions for the full duration to complete the course. There will not be an opportunity to catch up on anything that has been missed.

INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS IN THE LANCING AREA

We are aware of a known mobile network problem affecting the Lancing area. This maybe causing issues if patients are trying to contact their GP surgery using their mobile phone.

The GP phone systems are working normally and calls seem to be less affected if you call from a landline.

Please be mindful, this is out of our control.

Thank you, on behalf of all
