Good tips from heDr Karaning down inflammation in your skin. Plus a bonus picture of our current sunflower view! 🌻

“The anti-inflammatory blueprint”

“Diet is not a “magic cure” for skin conditions, but the evidence so far points to one clear pattern: Mediterranean-style eating = calmer skin.

Things like oily fish, olive oil, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and heaps of vegetables. These foods are rich in antioxidants and healthy fats that dial down chronic, low-grade inflammation… the same inflammation linked to acne, premature ageing, and skin sensitivity.

5 foods for great skin (backed by real science)

Prebiotic-rich foods (garlic, onions, leeks, beans, Jerusalem artichokes): When gut bacteria ferment these fibers, they release short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that reduce inflammation and may support clearer skin.

Dark chocolate (70%+ cocoa): In one trial, women who ate cocoa flavanols daily saw improved elasticity and fewer wrinkles after 6 months. (2 squares a day is enough.)

Green tea: Catechins, the antioxidants in green tea, protect against sun damage and improve hydration. Around 4 cups daily was linked to smoother, more elastic skin.

Tomato paste: About 2 tablespoons daily for 12 weeks protected skin from UV damage in studies, thanks to lycopene…an antioxidant that gets stronger with cooking.

Sunflower seeds: One of the richest sources of vitamin E, which protects skin from oxidative stress and dryness. Almonds and hazelnuts are also great options.

No single food or supplement will give you “perfect skin.” The real win is in consistency and variety… feeding both your gut and skin microbes a diverse, anti-inflammatory buffet.
Add in the basics (SPF, good sleep, stress management, no smoking), and you’re giving your skin the environment it needs to thrive.”

If you’re relying on your “SPF moisturiser” for complete sun protection, you may need to think again.
This type of moisturiser is more and more common. It usually has an SPF rating, protecting you against UVB rays. It may also be marketed as “broad spectrum”, however, not all UVA protection is equal. If yours doesn’t have a star rating, contact the company who make it and ask. 5 stars is the highest protection, 4 stars is acceptable… but in my experience most of these moisturisers only have 3 star UVA protection. If you want to protect from skin aging and disease, make the smart choice and use a proper sunblock when UV is high to moderate, all through the year 😎 👒 ☀️

‼☀ At Skcin we feel passionate about raising awareness of this issue as we believe the boom in cosmetic products using SPF claims as a unique selling
point is misleading - and placing consumers at risk!

☀ We know that common misconceptions surround application and the level of protection actually afforded by products making such claims.

☀ This is fueled by lack of regulation, transparency and education - and it’s lulling consumers into a dangerous false sense of security.

☀ Unless the PRIMARY FUNCTION of the product is to protect the skin from UVA and UVB damage, then it simply cannot not be relied upon to provide adequate protection!

☀ Consumers are highly unlikely to apply the amount of moisturiser or foundation for example for the product to provide the level of SPF protection it claims. And of course, reapply that amount every two hours!

☀ Such products may form some protection against small amounts of incidental sun exposure, albeit for a short time - but due to lack of transparency, instruction and education, consumers are being mislead by these claims which is putting them at risk of sun damage and skin cancer.

☀ Applying a high-factor (SPF 30+), broad-spectrum (that also protects against UVA) sunscreen should form part of your DAILY skin care routine, and if outdoors for longer periods, it should be reapplied at least every two hours to maintain efficacy.

🙏 Please share this important messaging - prevention is better than cure!💛

On the edge of the Somerset Levels, in a little village between the thriving towns of Langport and Ilminster, I’m here at Apple Tree Studio to offer you a chance to reconnect with yourself and unwind.

As an aromatherapist, built into my facial treatments is an understanding of how our olfactory sense helps us to relax, rebalance & calm emotions. As a holistic massage therapist, there’s the added in-depth knowledge of how human touch reaches our subconscious & helps us feel safe, secure & connected.

The aim of my treatments is to help you find your inner balance. I always say to my clients that if you look after yourself, you can look after people around you better.

Oh & of course, there’s the added bonus of a beautiful treat for your skin. So after a treatment you look good, smell good & feel good!

Website link in bio. Call, text, what’s app, email to enquire about an appointment. Now booking from mid October.

The Impact of Cosmetics on Eyes 👀

July was Dry Eye Awareness month, so here’s a post with some tips.
Dry eye disease can have many contributing factors, with eyes feeling gritty, sore or overly watery.
As well as developing good habits such as limiting screen time, our use of cosmetics plays a role in keeping our eyes healthy. To help limit inflammation & damage in this delicate area:

Don’t:
❌ sleep in eye make-up
❌ share eye make-up
❌ eyeliner on the waterline (inner eyelid margin)
❌ retinol or isotretinoin near your eyes
❌ lash growth serums
❌ lash tints
❌ false lashes
❌ cosmetic ingredients around your eyes:
- Argirilene (Acetyl Hexapeptide‑8)
- Benzalkonium chloride
- Carbon black
- Chlorphenesin
- Formaldehyde
- Isopropyl cloprostenate
- Parabens
- Phenoxyethanol
- Retinols
- Terpinen-4-ol

Do:
✅ Replace eye make-up regularly
