An ingrowing toenail occurs when the nail grows into the surrounding skin, often causing pain, swelling, and infection.

Common causes include genetics, poor nail-cutting technique, injury, and tight footwear. Initially mild, symptoms can worsen over time, making walking or even sleeping painful.

If untreated, infections can develop and lead to more serious complications. The most effective long-term solution is a minor surgical procedure done under local anaesthetic, typically taking just 45 minutes.

Recovery involves rest, proper aftercare, and wearing open-toed shoes.

For lasting relief from pain and discomfort, consider treatment—help is available, and it’s not as daunting as it sounds.

Trimming toenails may seem simple, but doing it incorrectly can cause issues like ingrown toenails.

Common mistakes include cutting nails too short, curving the edges, or using the wrong tools. Long nails can press against shoes, damaging the nail bed and leading to painful problems. Use sharp, quality nippers, start trimming from the middle with small cuts, and keep the nail edge flat. File down any jagged edges.

Regular checks and trims help prevent blisters and discomfort. If you struggle to reach your feet, ask for help or see a professional.

Don’t ignore foot care, it’s easier to prevent than to treat!

I would like to confirm that the time has come to hang up the nursing hat and put down the nippers, after 50 years in healthcare, it's time to retire. The doors to my lovely clinic will be closing for the last time on the 30th of September. You have about 7 weeks to bag a final podiatry appointment with me.

🥺 It is sad, I love my clinic and to all of my patients and the families of those I have cared for; we have laughed, cried, shared stories and you are all great, and I will miss you, But I will still be around and bound to bump into you, probably in one of the recommended eating hostelries we have talked about!

A massive thank you to everyone for supporting my business, both for the homecare and podiatry. Special thanks to my parents and friends. But now it's time for me to put my feet up, read some books, put my boots on for a walk, or maybe even dig out my sandals and treat myself to a holiday.

Remember, after September, no more talk of feet when you see me in the coffee shop or around town! 👋

Heel pain, often caused by plantar fasciitis, typically affects the bottom of the foot near the heel and arch. It’s common to feel pain when getting up in the morning or after rest, which eases with movement.

Simple self-care tips include rolling a tennis ball or chilled bottle under your foot and doing toe exercises. However, heel pain has many causes, so accurate diagnosis is key.

At Totally Podiatry, we use treatments like orthotics, taping, laser therapy (using our MLS® laser “Galileo”), and personalised plans to get you moving pain-free. Book an assessment for effective, tailored treatment.

During the warmer weather, it’s the perfect time to give your feet some extra care and attention. Here are my top tips to keep your feet healthy, comfortable, and looking their best this summer:

Remove nail polish, please take off nail polish before your podiatry appointment. While the colours are lovely, I need to see your nails clearly to assess your foot and overall health.

Gardeners, wear shoes, always wear footwear while gardening to protect against injury. If you use sprays or fertilisers, wash your hands and legs afterward to prevent skin reactions.

Use sun cream, it may not have been a big thing in the '60s, but it's vital now. Apply sunscreen from head to toe, especially on your feet. Remember: Slip on clothes, Slop on sunscreen, Slap on a hat, Slide on sunglasses, and Sit in the shade.

If you have Diabetes , check your feet daily. Hot weather can cause swelling that masks small injuries. Regular checks can help prevent serious complications.

Blisters, transitioning to sandals can cause blisters. Moisturise your feet daily and avoid popping blisters. If one bursts, cover it with a sterile plaster.

Foot pain, summer shoes often lack support. This can trigger heel pain or plantar fasciitis. Choose supportive, cushioned footwear where possible.

Trim toenails properly, make sure your nails are neat. Use nail nippers, starting in the middle and working outward.

Stay hydrated, aim for 2 litres of water daily, more in the heat, to support your overall health.

Put your feet up, elevate your feet when you can. It boosts circulation and reduces swelling.

Bursitis in the foot is a painful inflammatory condition that occurs when the small, fluid-filled sacs called bursae become irritated and swollen. These bursae act as cushions between bones, tendons, and muscles, helping to reduce friction during movement. In the foot, bursitis commonly affects areas such as the heel, big toe joint, and the ball of the foot.

The condition typically develops from repetitive stress, overuse, or direct trauma to the foot. Athletes, particularly runners and dancers, are at higher risk due to the repetitive impact on their feet. Ill-fitting shoes, prolonged standing, and certain foot deformities can also contribute to the development of bursitis.

Symptoms of foot bursitis include localised pain and tenderness, particularly when pressure is applied to the affected area. Patients often experience swelling, warmth, and redness around the inflamed bursa. The pain typically worsens with activity and may be accompanied by stiffness, especially in the morning or after periods of rest. Walking or bearing weight on the affected foot can become increasingly uncomfortable.

Galileo's laser therapy is an effective treatment option for foot bursitis, it is a non-invasive treatment uses focused light energy to pe*****te deep into the tissues, promoting cellular repair and reducing inflammation. The laser therapy stimulates blood circulation, accelerates healing, and provides pain relief without the need for medications or surgery.

Get in touch if you have painful feet, let's get that sorted.
