June is SANDS Awareness Month — a time to pause, reflect, and remember the tiny lives lost too soon. At Toad, we know that grief doesn’t follow a neat path, and love never ends. This month, we stand with the families who carry their babies in their hearts every day, offering our support, our ears, and our space to honour those stories.

While the topic is heavy, we also believe in gentle moments of light — a smile shared over a memory, a sunflower in bloom, or even a quiet nudge from Ripley the counselling dog. Through compassion and connection, we find hope. Whether you’ve experienced loss yourself or want to show your support, Toad is here — for talking, for listening, and for remembering, always. Let’s walk gently together this month, and beyond.

🎙️ New episode of Listening In out now 🎙️

Please be aware that su***de and bereavement by su***de is the main focus of this podcast episode.

Steve Roodhouse left for work one day, and never came home. Caroline, his wife was faced with the awful reality that Steve had taken his own life, and found herself in the unimaginable position of having to tell their two young daughters; Evie who was 9, and Ada, who was 2.

Since then Caroline has help others understand about the reality of life after a su***de by writing and speaking about her experience and she gives a voice to others impacted by this particular type of grief.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT is probably best understood by what it is trying to achieve. The main premise of CBT is that problems develop as a consequence of learnt ways of thinking (cognition) and behaving, and that learning new ways of thinking and behaving will have more helpful impacts on emotions and well-being.

Cognition: the C in CBT

The cognitive element of CBT refers to our thoughts, mental images, self-talk and core beliefs about ourselves (I’m ok, or I’m not), other people (they are generally friendly or they’re not) and the world around us (the future is bright or it’s not).
