Most of us live in our heads more than in our bodies. We tend to spend our days in mental overdrive thinking, doing, planning, going, creating, scrolling…

The space of our mind tends to be so loud and cluttered we get caught up and forget to pause and feel into ourselves – into our bodies.

Our body is incredibly intelligent, intuitive, and wise. It knows exactly what to do to thrive and it constantly gives us feedback about what it needs.

But often we miss the subtle sensations, warnings, and body signals that urge us to slow down, pause, rest, recharge, and go inward. Learning to listen to our own body is a skill in self-attunement and a practice we should all be making time for.

This skill should be cultivated regularly if we want to increase well-being, improve mental health, maintain a healthy body and heal or prevent any health problems from taking over.

Yoga is great place to start, taking regular classes can allow us to take the time to check in with ourselves, to slow down, to breathe, to move, to relax and to let go.

Join me this week as we feel into the body and notice what it’s communicating to us.

Do you suffer with tension headaches?

Do you have the weight of the world on your shoulders?

Stiff or tight shoulders can cause discomfort and limit a person’s range of motion. If the tightness goes unchecked, it can cause neck pain and tension headaches.

Shoulder stretches can help relieve muscle tension, pain, and tightness in the neck and shoulders. Neck stretches, shoulder roles, and various yoga poses may help reduce stiffness and increase flexibility.

Come and join me this Saturday morning to stretch out those tight muscles and ease your way into the weekend.

Do you have tight shoulders?

Tension and tightness in your neck and shoulders is a common symptom of anxiety and stress. It’s part of your body’s fight or flight stress response and in short it’s preparing your body to confront or survive a perceived physical threat.

An increased mental workload can cause extra shoulder tension. With too many things to do and not enough time to do it you may literally feel like you are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. It’s a saying for a reason!

The upper back and shoulder area is known to reflect emotional holding on, if we hold back love or feel a lack of support it can show up in this area. Also resentment, lodged feelings of hurt, fear and grief are reflected by our ability to breathe.

Beliefs about emotional support are reflected here. What have you pushed back so you don’t have to feel the feelings.

Fortunately, shoulder pain and tightness from stress responds very well to yoga, stretching and other relaxation methods.

If you suffer with tight or sore shoulders then this weeks class is for you.

The biggest misconception when it comes to Yoga is that you need to be flexible to do it and also that you have to be good at it!

Yoga is not about being flexible, it is about looking after your mind, body and soul. The key to yoga is within your approach.

Approach every class with a huge well done to you for making it, that’s a great start!

Next concentrate only on yourself, your breath and your body movement, pretend there is no body in the room except you and the teacher.

Listen to the teacher and follow the cues and instructions to the best of your ability, your best is always good enough even if you don’t feel like you are doing it right.

Listen to your body, remember what we said about not having to be flexible, that’s very important here! Listen to what ‘your’ body is telling you, never force a posture, there are no prizes for best posture at the end of class, so find what feels good, maybe even a little bit challenging and breathe there.

Breathe, Breathe and Breathe

At the end of class, stay in Savasana for as long as you can, to allow your body to reap the rewards.

Be proud of yourself, you have achieved something today!

Leave with a smile.

Research studies in the past have shown that yoga in the morning can help to reduce stress hormones and improve your clarity and productivity throughout the day.

Gentle movement in the morning eases muscle stiffness, allowing better blood flow through the body.

Taking the time to breath consciously leads to increased lung capacity which can be beneficial for the functioning of all your organs.

Studies have shown that yoga and meditation in the morning can help dopamine and endorphin production and thus leads to a happy and enjoyable day.

By doing yoga in the morning, the body’s metabolism is boosted and the digestive system is stimulated helping to digest the required nutrients from food and release waste products.

Say goodbye to your morning coffee as early morning yoga will give you a burst of energy to get your day off to a great start without the caffeine slump afterwards.

Join me this Saturday morning at 8am to start your day on the right foot.

Do you have trouble sleeping?

Ever thought about trying yoga?

The benefits of yoga for a better nights sleep are endless……

Improved sleep quality and duration- better quality sleep means better overall health.

Regular yoga can help manage symptoms of insomnia.

Promotes relaxation.

Yoga can help to put your body in a calm state, known as the relaxation response. This is the opposite of the fight-or-flight response. Doing calming yoga poses may help you to relax and enter a lower state of arousal.

Yoga can help to lower the stress hormone cortisol. A regular practice can help to alleviate stress-related concerns such as weight gain, anxiety, and insomnia.

Practicing yoga before bedtime is a terrific way to release everything you’re holding onto mentally or physically before sinking into a peaceful night of deep sleep.

You may be able to fall asleep quicker, sleep for longer, and find it easier to fall back to sleep after waking during the night.

Join me this week to unwind and relax your way to a great nights rest.

Do you find it difficult to fit ‘me time’ into your busy schedule? You are not alone. The truth is, you will never find ‘me time’ no matter how hard you look. You must create this time for yourself and make it a non negotiable just like brushing your teeth or taking a shower.

When was the last time you enjoyed quality, intentional ‘me time’?

Our days are filled with countless activities that support the ones we love. In the process of caring for others, we often forget about nurturing ourselves, which has a negative effect on our wellbeing and on those around us.

The number one way to make sure you’re able to support and serve others is by nurturing and supporting yourself. You can do this by scheduling simple self-care routines and making them non-negotiable.

Why not start with a regular yoga practice, just one hour per week can be enough to allow you to switch off from all your regular duties and focus completely on you.

Try it and notice the space you create in your head, your body and in your life.

You deserve time for you.

Our lives are filled with so much stimulation. We are constantly bombarded with all kinds of stuff which takes our attention so far away from what is happening in the present moment that we can feel lost, un-centered, and in a state of overwhelm and disharmony.

It is important to take time out of the daily grind, to remove ourselves from the noise and be really quiet.

This art of practicing silence is so beneficial. On a surface level, it refers to simply not talking, and on deeper levels it means making the space internally and externally to be still and quiet, to hear what’s going on underneath, to listen to your deepest thoughts, to feel emotions that we usually push aside.

Here we is where we can really find peace, if we are willing to practice silence and work through whatever comes up in that silence.

Join me this week CWS Fitness - Wishaw as we make some space in our lives to explore peace and silence.
