👣Ingrown toenails occur when the edge or corner of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin. This can cause pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection.😬
Causes of an ingrown toenail include:
✖️Improper nail trimming: Cutting toenails too short or not straight across can encourage the nail to grow into the surrounding skin.
✖️Poorly fitting shoes: Wearing shoes that are too tight or narrow can compress the toes, causing the nails to grow abnormally and potentially become ingrown.
✖️Gait abnormalities(unusual walking patterns)
✖️Trauma or injury: Stubbing your toe or injury to the toe.
✖️Abnormal nail structure
Signs and symptoms of an ingrown toenail may include:
👣Pain and tenderness: The affected area may be sensitive to pressure or touch.
👣Redness and swelling: The skin around the ingrown toenail can become swollen, inflamed, and appear red.
👣Infection: If the ingrown toenail breaks the skin, bacteria can enter, leading to infection. Signs of infection may include increased pain, warmth, drainage of pus, and in severe cases, fever.
👣Difficulty wearing shoes: As the ingrown toenail worsens, it can become increasingly uncomfortable to wear shoes, especially those that put pressure on the affected toe.
👣Overgrowth of skin: In response to the ingrown toenail, the skin surrounding the nail may thicken or overgrow.
We offer various solutions to treat and prevent ingrown nails, including:
1. Conservative Management
✅Cutting back the nail and clearing down the side to remove the nail, easing any pain.
2. Nail surgery
✅Partial Nail Avulsion: This involves the removal of the ingrown portion of the nail under local anesthesia. This procedure may be recommended if conservative measures fail or if the ingrown toenail recurs frequently.
✅Total Nail Avulsion: In some severe or recurrent cases, the removal of the entire toenail is another option.
3. Education and prevention
✅We can offer advice on the correct way to trim nails, appropriate footwear, and measures to prevent recurrence.
