7 Benefits of Being Coached by Someone with Relevant Experience or Proven Success

On numerous occassions in the last 17 years of my coaching career I have had people act surprised when I tell them I am being coached.

When it comes to achieving your goals—whether in business, fitness, personal development, or any other area of life—choosing the right coach is critical. One of the best decisions I have ever made is to work with someone who has either done exactly what I wanted to do or has successfully coached others to achieve similar results. This approach offers a range of benefits that can fast-track success and help avoid common pitfalls. One of my mentors once said the phrase “stand on the shoulders of giants” meaning you don’t have to make the same mistakes as they have in getting where you want to be.

Here are 7 reasons I believe people do better with the right coach. These 7 can also help you to make better choice’s.

1. Proven Experience and Credibility

For me a coach who has walked the same path or coached others through similar challenges brings real-world experience to the table. They understand the nuances, obstacles, and opportunities because they’ve either been through it themselves or have seen others go through it. This level of insight can give you confidence in their guidance, knowing that they’ve been where you want to go or helped others get there.

For example, if you’re an fitness enthusiast aiming to complete your first fitness event such as a Hyrox, a coach who has already built a successful reputation for helping others do this will be able to offer insights that only come from first-hand experience. Similarly, if your goal is to compete in an Ironman or complete a marathon, a coach who has either completed Ironmans/ marathons or trained others to do so will understand the physical and mental demands far better than someone who hasn’t been in that arena.

2. Faster Learning and Fewer Mistakes

By working with a coach who has already achieved what you’re striving for, you gain the advantage of their hard-earned lessons. They can tell you what works and, more importantly, what doesn’t. This dramatically reduces the time you spend figuring things out on your own or making avoidable mistakes.

For example, if your goal is to complete a Hyrox, a coach who has already done this can help you skip over unnecessary strategies or wasted time. Instead of experimenting with tactics that might not work, you can leverage their insights to focus on the methods that are most likely to bring results. Stand on the shoulders of giants again!

3. Tailored Advice Based on What Works

A key benefit of having a knowledgeable coach is the ability to receive personalised advice. For me the word “experienced”is a fallacy within our industry. I have enlisted the services of multiple young coaches who deliver incredible service because they are hungry to learn and research. Experienced is only good when it’s up to date and current. So whilst I value my 17+ years of coaching in the industry, I know it’s only relevant if I am constantly learning and bettering myself. As soon as I stop that, I stop what I am doing.

Coaches who have been through the process with others understand that success isn’t one-size-fits-all. They can help you navigate your unique circumstances and provide guidance that’s specifically tailored to your needs, strengths, and challenges.

Whether they’ve accomplished the goal themselves or helped others do so, they know how to adapt their coaching to fit the individual. This helps ensure that their strategies and tips align with your situation, instead of offering generic advice that may not apply to you. I don’t believe you have to have done the sport to be able to coach elements of it but it does help! Having coached over 30 national and world record holders in the sport of sheep shearing I have no shame in admitting I know very little in terms of the technical elements of shearing, but what I do know is how to apply the science and help those athletes adapt to the demands imposed upon them in feats of extreme endurance.

4. Trust and Accountability

Working with a coach who has been where you want to go fosters a sense of trust and credibility. You’re more likely to believe in their guidance because you know they’ve successfully done it before. This trust can lead to higher levels of commitment and accountability, which are critical for staying on track with your goals.

Moreover, coaches who have successfully guided others are adept at holding their clients accountable. They understand the common reasons why people fall off track and can develop strategies to help you stay focused and motivated. The knowledge that your coach has helped others achieve the same goal creates a sense of responsibility on your part to follow through. When I watch Charlie coaching those clients amongst our fitness family that want to do a Hyrox you can see that he clearly understands what needs to be done and what needs to be thought of. After all anyone can make someone tired but not everyone can make someone better!

5. Access to Insider Knowledge and Networks

In many cases, educated and experienced coaches not only provide knowledge but also offer access to their networks. If they’ve built their own success or coached others to achieve it, they often have valuable connections within the industry. These relationships can open doors for you, providing opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

Whether it’s introducing you to potential training partners, helping you make friends with like minded people, or guiding you toward the best resources, an experienced and current coach can be your gateway to a wealth of opportunities that will accelerate your progress.

6. Long-Term Vision and Strategy

A coach who has either achieved your desired outcome or coached others to do so knows the importance of thinking long-term. They can help you see beyond the immediate challenges and guide you in developing a strategy that will sustain success over time. I say this so many times when I take new members on in consultations that we are interested in long term strategies to help them become healthier. There are million and one fads out there selling the quick fix but there are no short cuts to long term success.

Instead of focusing solely on quick wins, the best coaches can show you how to build a foundation for long-lasting success. Their experience helps them anticipate future challenges and opportunities, enabling them to prepare you for both.

7. Inspiration and Motivation

One of the greatest motivators is seeing someone else who has already accomplished what you desire. A coach with firsthand experience can serve as a powerful source of inspiration. When you see that they’ve achieved the same goal or guided others through similar struggles, it reinforces the belief that your goal is attainable. This is honestly the biggest draw for the clients we work with, over the years we have helped thousands of others in our network both locally and online to achieve and people trust us. That’s not something we take lightly and we are the first to refer out if we don’t think we can help.

For me coaching isn’t just about the good times, we must be there to help our clients through the lows of the journey as well and can encourage you when times get tough.

The success of our clients becomes proof that persistence pays off, helping to motivate you to keep going even when obstacles arise.

⭐️Client Success ⭐️ 🚴‍♂️ How I Lost 20kg and Increased My W/KG by 44% in 12 Months!🚴‍♂️

At 58, I set two major cycling goals for 2023: the Etape Loch Ness and Lands End 100. With the help of Matt and a structured training plan (5 cycling + 4 mobility/core sessions weekly), I completed both events in record time.

But I still struggled with tough climbs, so I teamed up with Matt again to work on my weight and nutrition. Key changes:

• InBody Scans to track body composition.
• Food Diary via MyFitnessPal to hit calorie, carb, fat & protein goals.
• Walking 2+ miles, 3x a week to improve endurance.

The results? I lost 20kg, kept my muscle, and boosted my W/KG to 2.57. Recently, I conquered hills I could never manage before, finishing the Lands End 100 without walking once!

Huge thanks to Matt, Mike, and the team for their guidance. Ready to take on my next challenge!

🎉Client Congratulations 🎉

Rosie Hazelwood becomes the first woman to successfully shear for 24 hours on 28th June 2024.

A really determined character; Rosie has had 5 knee surgeries on her left knee from the ages of 8 - 28 and 4 on her right knee from the age of 826 years.

I first met Rosie on a Shear Performance seminar at Matt Smith’s farm in Cornwall 2023. She expressed to me then that in spite of all the pain she was in she wanted to do something big when she got it sorted.

She then had a full knee replacement at October 2023 but unfortunately this went wrong after having 7 knee drainages where they took 25 litres of fluid out for 7 weeks.

Rosie then went back under the knife again to remove infection in knee and later to have the knee replacement done all over again.

Rosie struggled with her mental health but instead of clocking out we worked together from getting her walking and then back to the gym.

We worked really hard on developing her knee stability with minimal flexion. This meant we chose strength exercises that were more hip dominant and also quad strengthening in an extended position. We also chose cardiovascular exercises that were all low impact to help keep her knees as healthy as possible.

Prior to the work we did together Rosie missed a whole year shearing and in 8 Months has turned everything around to shear 660 sheep in the 24 hours. This consisted of 12 x 2 hour stints.

Rosie raised money for charities that support those in the farming industry struggling with mental health. In particular the Yellow Wellies charity.

Rosie’s friend Lenn unfortunately took his own life and Rosie said to me she “wanted to raise awareness that no matter how bad it gets you always look forward and never back”.

Unreal levels of resilience Rosie has shown to achieve this and a real credit to herself and inspiration to those who have suffered injuries as to what can be done.

Well done Rosie, we are all super proud of your efforts.

1st triathlon of the season…..

6 weeks into triathlon training for 2024 so no massive expectations here…..

Roadford Lake the venue today….. actually, this where I did my first open water triathlon back in 2013 when the journey all began.

This morning the fog descended on the lake and delayed the start by 20 minutes….we got in, and then got out (it rolled in again), and then got back in to finally start.

I led out the start but soon realised I didn’t quite have my “race pace” in me today….. not enough longer intervals yet to realistically expect to hold that…… so took it steady and cruised the rest of it…..

A poor time for me compared to my usual left me in 18th…. next job…..

The bike….. that on the other hand felt great…. I knew; like the swim I had only done 4 rides longer than 2 hours thus far in the training block so if it fell apart I would have understood.

However, by the time I had got 15 miles into the 58 mile bike I was up to 7th and by the end of lap 1 of 2 I was in 3rd. I never ever saw the 1st and 2nd place athletes…..far too quick for me today.

The last lap, I had to stop for a couple of minutes to pick up a bottle that dropped after hitting a pot hole. Normally I might have left it but today it was so hot and I wanted to try a different fuelling/hydration plan and the race result itself wasn’t really that important to me.

This cost me a place, so I finished the bike in 4th (5s behind 3rd). I think I gained this back in transition and then on to the run.

My hamstrings and adductors started to tell me that they haven’t pushed that hard on the bike for that long in a very long time. I had lots of support out on the run, thanks to all of you.

Nothing spectacular on the run, I definitely didn’t have the right footwear for the wetter parts of the course, which didn’t help the old adductors.

A very hilly run, went reasonably well… but I did lose one place eventually on the last lap to finish in 4th overall.

Lots to work on for the next race but with more swimming volume, on a flatter bike course and tarmac for the run I am expecting to be much better in Portugal in 4 weeks time.

It’s a long season with my main race being in December so it’s important to keep focused on that. A few things for me and my coach to work on… that starts tomorrow.

A roast beef and mobility session tonight and I am feeling slightly more human again!

Thanks for all the messages and support today.

DRIATHLON is a fitness event where participants of all ages and abilities can test themselves against the hour long challenge which comprises of a 20 minute ski, 20 minute bike and 20 minute row with a 2 minute rest/transition time period between each machine.

The DRIATHLON utilises the measure of Calories to score each participant.
Scores from ski/bike/row are accumulated to give an overall score.

Participants are competing locally at host venues across the UK but also nationally, with their score being fed in to the national leaderboard here:
https://www.driathlon.co.uk/leaderboard/

High scorers are invited to compete at the Annual British DRIATHLON Championships which this year will be held at FitXpo at The NEC in Birmingham on 1st-3rd November.

We have divisions for all age groups from 10 years to 80+. We also have same s*x or mixed pairs divisions if you would prefer to tackle the course with a training partner, friend or family member.

Hyrox Turin ✅

🔥⏰1:08:39 PB for Hyrox….. goal achieved….now we go for closer to 1:05 ….new target set!

👍42/819 overall male

👍9/172 in age group

This time last year I did my first Hyrox….loved it!

The benefits of the training took me through very minimal triathlon training due to the arrival of my daughter Gracie right in the middle of the season.

The solid base of strength work brought me some good results within triathlon and cycling time trials in the 2023 season qualifying for the age group European champs in Portugal and the Ironman 70.3 World champs in New Zealand.

I absolutely believe that this sport has “legs” for most people to help with fitness and social connection.

Obviously amongst all of that Charlie has led our Hyrox Partner gym and Hyrox Coaching in which we have now over 120 members of our community across individual and group programmes both in person and online.

We now have 3 members who have qualified for the world championships and next we take 30 members on a road trip to our next event.

Big thanks to for coaching me personally as with my various old man niggles and arthritis in my big toe from an old rugby injury I am not the easiest to programme for.

Also obviously a MASSIVE thanks to , who supports me to get the work done and keeps me on my toes whilst being an amazing mum.

Now to watch .nca go sub 1 hour in the PRO event tonight!
