We were a bit worried about the presentation here. Tympanosclerosis can occur on any TM but it looked a bit ‘fluffy’

Tympanosclerosis is the medical term for scarring of the ear drum. Scarring occurs after the ear drum is injured or after surgery. Commonly a small white area can be seen after a person has had middle ear ventilation tubes. The scarring on the ear drum looks bright white.

If it is asymptomatic then it is often left but if causing hearing issues then either hearing aids or surgery may be considered.

We have referred him to ENT for their opinion but in the meantime I asked for the expert opinion of Consultant Audiologist, Neel Raithatha , of The hear clinic. He agreed it was non -urgent and likely just Tympanosclerosis. So the client can be reassured in the meantime.

Non urgent wait times for ENT are at around 18 months in the UK at present so we are very grateful to be able to ask for the valuable opinion of Neel.

This is a poorly ear that Tanya picked up yesterday. Possibly a ‘Aspergillus Niger’ fungal infection.( see the black colour to the right )

Aspergillus niger is a common type of mold known for its black, powdery appearance. It thrives in damp and warm environments and is often found in soil, compost, and decaying plant material. Indoors, it can grow on building materials, food products, and textiles. While it has significant industrial applications, it can pose health risks, particularly for individuals with respiratory sensitivities or compromised immune systems.

Referred to GP for Antifungal treatment.
