Today is Trans Day of Visibility.

I applaud the courage of all trans people who are visible and live authentically.

It's equally ok to not be visible. The world can be a scary place and there is no denying that trans people are under constant attack at the moment, from public figures, from the media, and from people in the Government.

That's why today is not just about celebrating trans people and their contributions to the world, but also calling out the discrimination and atrocities that trans people still face.

This must stop. Hate must stop. It should have no place in a modern, civilised society.

As a trans ally I will continue to use my voice, platform and privilege to stand alongside trans people, defend trans rights and freedoms, and amplify trans voices.

As a trans affirmative therapist I will continue to provide a safe, inclusive and accessible service where trans people can be authentic and explore what they wish to without judgement.

Trans men are men.
Trans women are women.
Non-binary people exist and are valid.
Trans rights are human rights.

I'm really pleased to be a featured expert in the new issue of Happiful Magazine. My article is about why pronouns matter in therapy. As well as being a therapist who specialises in working with LGBT+ clients, I support and train other therapists from all around the world to run more inclusive, accessible therapy practices and be LGBT+ affirmative. This stuff really matters, as I keep saying, and I'm proud to be helping the therapy profession to become more open and inclusive. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ

As an LGBT+ affirmative therapist, I support LGBT+ clients to thrive and also support therapists to be more LGBT+ affirmative themselves.

I keep saying it, but this stuff really matters.

Too many LGBT+ people have suffered harm in therapy because their therapist was not LGBT+ affirmative.

Too many LGBT+ people experience hate, prejudice and discrimination just for being who they are.

And so many therapists want to work with LGBT+ clients but don't feel confident or skilled enough to do so.

If you think I can help you, get in touch.

Discover LGBT+ inclusive support, whether you are a client seeking therapy or a therapist wanting to support LGBT+ clients.

It was wonderful to give a talk to the lovely counsellors at Sunderland Counselling Service today. I spoke about working with LGBT+ people.

A lot of my work is about helping therapists all around the world to develop their skills, knowledge and confidence in working with LGBT+ communities.

It means therapists can provide inclusive, accessible services and it improves experiences for LGBT+ clients too.

This stuff really does matter.

Good morning. This isn't wholly therapy related but it's something I need to say. I was given an award for my work supporting LGBT+ people and now the newspaper that gave it to me is enabling hate towards LGBT+ people to thrive on their social media. So, they can have the award back. I don't want anything that comes from an organisation that puts likes, comments and clicks before the lives of LGBT+ people.

As an LGBT+ affirmative therapist I see the impact that hate has on LGBT+ lives. It's toxic, damaging, and some people don't make it. More kindness and acceptance is needed. So, again, they can have their award back.

I'm very excited to have been chosen to present at the Hypnothoughts conference in Las Vegas next summer. It was great to fly over earlier this year and I'm thrilled to be invited back. I'll be talking all things LGBT+ and look forward to connecting, learning and sharing with other hypnotherapists at the biggest hypnotherapy conference in the world. πŸ™πŸΌπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸŒŸ

Today I watched a video that a hypnotherapist in Australia made about moments of change. As I was watching it, something caught my eye on the shelf behind them. I thought 'that looks familiar, where have I seen that before'.

Then I realised it's my book, How to be an LGBT+ Affirmative Therapist. It was an unexpected surprise.

While I know the book is doing well, it was nice to see how far it's reaching. This is what I hope for - therapists everywhere becoming LGBT+ affirmative. I keep saying it, but this stuff really matters.

Anyway, if you've not got your copy yet, click on the link below and treat yourself.

How to be an LGBT+ Affirmative Therapist is an informative, practical handbook to help all types of therapist work with LGBT+ clients and patients. It's and here is a blog I wrote for the National Hypnotherapy Society about being a trans affirmative therapist.

Trans people need understanding, acceptance and respect, not hate, prejudice and discrimination.

If you are a therapist, you may find that you work with a wide range of clients who vary in backgrounds, identities and lived experiences. With increased awareness and visibility of trans people, more trans people are seeking therapy to work through their issues. Many of the issues will relate direc...

Today I was up far too early for a Sunday, but for a very good reason. It was great to deliver an LGBT+ affirmative therapist session for hypnotherapists at the UK Hypnosis Convention. This stuff really matters and I feel strongly that every therapist should be LGBT+ affirmative. Huge thanks to Adam Eason and the team at UKHC for allowing me to have this platform and for being wonderful, welcoming and inclusive. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈπŸ’œπŸ¦„πŸ™πŸΌ

Today is International Pronouns Day.

Here is a blog I wrote about the importance of pronouns in therapy.

We all have pronouns. Mine are he/him.

Counsellor Daniel Browne discusses the importance of pronouns for therapists working with clients.

Today is National Coming Out Day.

Sadly, prejudice, discrimination and hate towards LGBT+ people still exists. It means that a lot of people hide their sexual orientation and/or gender identity and feel they cannot be their authentic self.

I work with a lot of LGBT+ people and hear a lot of similar things about the verbal abuse, physical attacks, discrimination, hate, rejection, fear and isolation that is experienced. Part of me relates. As a gay person I've been through a lot of those things myself.

Everyone should be able to live freely as who they are. While I'm not saying that everyone should or has to come out, everyone should at least feel able to not hide who they are or worry about what's going to happen to them if they do.

It is also vital that all therapists are LGBT+ affirmative. Any therapist who does not work in an affirming way should not be working with LGBT+ clients. It's dangerous and unethical.

Fortunately, more and more therapists are becoming LGBT+ affirmative. I'm lucky to train many of them, and there are many more who have read my book 'How to be an LGBT+ Affirmative Therapist'. There have been changes and updates in some therapy training courses to make them more inclusive, and I'm confident that things will keep moving forward.

This stuff really matters. While there has been a lot of legal progress (at least here in the UK) in recent years, things are mixed societally and we're actually seeing hate towards LGBT+ people rise. It means more LGBT+ people experiencing horrific things. It means more LGBT+ suffering. It means more LGBT+ people requiring therapeutic support.

If you are out and proud, I applaud and celebrate you and your identity and your life. If you don't feel able to come out or are thinking about it, that's ok too. People should only come out when they want to and when the time is right. It's also ok not to come out. Everyone is different and the most important thing is being happy with yourself and who you are.

Here is a blog I wrote for the National Hypnotherapy Society about why coming out in the therapy room matters.

On 11th October each year since the late 1980s, National Coming Out Day has been marked. It’s a day of awareness and celebration that started in America and is now recognised globally.

It's my firm belief that all therapists should be LGBT+ affirmative. If they're not, they are in the wrong profession. Accepting, respecting, understanding and affirming LGBT+ client's identities can be a huge part of their healing process.

Hello, and welcome to my page. I'm Dan aka The LGBT+ Therapist. I've been in practice since 2009 and I do a lot of work with LGBT+ people, helping them to thrive and get to where they want to be in life. I decided to set up a separate page from my general therapy page and have this as a place for all things LGBT+. Thanks for being part of it. And if I can help you too, get in touch.
