An advanced case of 'onychomycosis' (fungoid nail) caused at least in part by continuous wear of damp work boots, was successfully treated with a combination of regular appointments, daily self-administered topical treatment and prescribed tablets after a GP referral. J & J Foot Clinic says, "Winter's the ideal time to give your feet a break from nail polish and let your nails breathe! Using varnish continuously makes your nails dry, brittle and crumbly, and less effective as a barrier to bacteria and fungus.

"Dark colours may also pigment your nails, which can take a long time to grow out. So, this winter, do your feet a favour and let your nails go ‘au naturel’."

Drink plenty of water, keep moving, elevate your feet and give them a massage when possible, and incorporate plenty of diuretic foods (green beans and leaves, onions, beetroot, squash, pineapple and lemons) and natural sources of magnesium (bananas, nuts, spinach, and avocado) into your diet.
