SOME life changing news (not political):

Professor Kevin Moffat (my boss) and I, have received a significant pot of funding to create a permanent poetry trail that showcases the work I have undertaken to help promote women in science at the University of Warwick (School of Life Sciences).

The trail will be one of 6 major projects undertaken in 2025 to celebrate the university's 60th Birthday celebrations. I also hope it will be part of a fitting legacy for Prof Moffat as he embarks on retirement later this year. He is a true visionary who not only understands the value of the arts in science but has made many incredible art-science collaborations happen over a long and distinguished career.

The trail will comprise of 14 engraved and glass printed poetry posts permanently displayed across green spaces on Gibbet Hill campus, including the ancient bluebell woods (Tocil Woods) if we get permission. 2 of the posts will be embedded on Wellesbourne campus which houses the UK's vegetable gene bank and where I interviewed 2 of the 13 scientists for our project. A final post will be displayed at Foleshill Community centre where I co-wrote a poem with participants at the Planting Roots workshop developed with Warwick Institute of Engagement.

We will also be producing a trail map for visitors and a yearlong programme of workshops and events to launch the trail. Last but not least, it will be a fitting time and place to promote my forthcoming book with Pindrop Press edited by multi-award winning poet and editor Sharon Black. This book will share the entire collection of 65+ poems that emanated from my role as poet in residence since October 2022.

To think my work could be around in this way long after I've left the planet is the stuff of wild dreams. I don't think I'll ever quite get my head around it. Meanwhile there's much work to be done over the next few years...onwards and upwards my friends!

MARTIAL FLOW WORKSHOP: Sunday 19th May 10 - 12 PM

Drawing from yoga, qigong and movements from martial arts, this is a slow, graceful yet powerful practice designed to strengthen body and mind. Sequences are simple and easy to learn and repeated continuously in a fluid moving meditation. This is a mainly standing practice which also includes guided visualisations and breathwork. The workshop is punctuated with poetry readings and insights from ancient and modern texts that help to bring focus on the present moment.

โ€‹Theme: Fluid Power - exploring the element of water and its qualities of softness and strength

I will be running a 6 WEEK POETRY WRITING COURSE starting mid April:

Dates: Tuesday evenings from 18th April - 23rd May
Time: 7 - 8.30pm
Venue: Guys Cliffe Ave, Leamington Spa CV32 6LY
Spaces: 6

These small group coaching sessions will give you the confidence and skills to begin writing poetry in free verse/open form. Taking a playful, experimental approach, my aim is to share this magical art-form in a fun and accessible way. Whether you want to attend for personal development or enjoyment or wish to work towards publication, you will be guided in a nurturing environment and supported between sessions with private mentoring.

โ€‹We will explore different poetic devices, themes and styles of writing as well as examining inspiring words from a range of poets. To facilitate the process of writing I will also introduce a variety of creative exercises that involve drawing, painting and making. It may get messy! There is also an opportunity to work towards publishing your work in our international poetry publication: Crowstep Journal.

โ€‹If you would like to attend the course but feel a bit daunted or would like to chat further, do get in touch: su@thepoetryden.com

This is KUNDUR NARAYANA MENON (1861 - 1936) my great, great grandfather through my maternal line. He was an eminent Keralan spiritual poet and yogi and is still studied in Indian classrooms today.

I very recently discovered that he was part of a progressive group of writers in India that turned away from using the exclusive language of Sanskrit in favour of writing poetry in his regional language of Malayalam to better express his lived experience of everyday, ordinary life.

Next time I visit India, it is my hope to find his books and have them translated into English. This would be a dream come true and a massive inspiration as I work towards publishing my first book of poems soon which is themed around my lived experience of being a first generation British Asian woman.

I have posted up some new poems on www.sujathamenon.com
