A Day Out at the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa

We recently enjoyed a wonderful visit to the Royal Pump Rooms in Leamington Spa for the OPEN 2026 exhibition, showcasing an inspiring variety of artwork from talented artists across the West Midlands.

Our client R. had a fantastic time exploring the gallery, taking in the different pieces, and enjoying a calm, relaxed atmosphere. It was a truly enjoyable and enriching outing.

As part of our Wellness Beyond Care programme, we also offer a range of friendly and inclusive clubs to help people stay active, social, and connected:
• 🧘‍♀️ FREE Move & Mingle Club – gentle exercise and social interaction
• 🎨 Activities Club – games, crafts, and engaging sessions
• 🍽️ Lunch Club / Sunday Lunch Club – great food and great company
• 🌼 Golden Days Club – relaxed social time and meaningful connections

Every month, we also run a variety of unique events and activities. These are shared in our Events and Advocates newsletters - just let us know if you’d like to be signed up and kept up to date!

Whether it’s getting out into the community or joining one of our clubs, we’re here to support wellbeing in every way.

Helping someone living with dementia get dressed can be challenging, but small changes can make a big difference. Here are some helpful tips from carers and experts:

1. Keep choices simple
Too many options can be confusing. Offer two or three outfits at most. Let them choose, while gently guiding if needed.

2. Lay clothes out in order
Place items in the order they should be put on. This helps prevent frustration and keeps the routine predictable.

3. Stick to a routine
Getting dressed at the same time each day can reduce anxiety. Familiar habits help maintain independence.

4. Choose comfortable, easy-to-wear clothes
• Elastic waist trousers or pull-over tops avoid tricky buttons and zips
• Slip-on shoes or Velcro fastenings save time and effort
• Soft fabrics like cotton or fleece are gentle on sensitive skin

5. Respect their identity
Clothing is more than practical—it reflects who they are. If they have favourite colours or styles, include them as much as possible.

6. Use encouragement, not pressure
Gently guide rather than insist. If they say “no,” pause and try again later. Kind reassurance works better than rushing.

7. Adapt for seasons and occasions
Explain why certain clothing is needed—such as a warm coat in winter or lighter clothes on hot days. Offer choices so they feel involved.

8. Celebrate small successes
If they manage a button or sleeve on their own, acknowledge it. Encouragement helps build confidence and independence.

Dressing someone with dementia isn’t just about clothing—it’s about dignity, comfort, and preserving independence. With patience and simple strategies, it can become a more positive part of the daily routine.

Most care plans are built around checklists, mobility, nutrition, medication, continence, skin care, behaviour. These are important for safety, but they don’t always answer the bigger question: what makes life meaningful for the person receiving care? At New Age Care, care works best when it starts with the person, not the tasks. We focus on person-centred care, where identity, preferences, routines, and goals guide everything. When the person comes first, life feels familiar, comfortable, and truly their own.

1. People first, tasks second
Traditional plans ask, “What needs to be done?” This can put systems ahead of the person. We ask:
• Who is this person?
• What matters most to them?
• What does a good day look like?
Clinical care - medication, nutrition, falls prevention, supports the person’s life, not defines it.

2. Tasks alone don’t create meaningful days
Detailed plans can miss what makes life fulfilling. Person-centred care links support to identity and routine. A shower isn’t just hygiene, it’s feeling ready for visitors or church, and encouraging independence. Same task, completely different impact.

3. Engagement improves outcomes
Care that reflects what matters motivates people. Goals become meaningful:
• Attending a weekly coffee morning
• Walking to the dining room
• Joining family video calls
It also encourages honest conversations about risk, balancing safety with independence.

4. Smarter risk, not less safety
Person-centred care doesn’t reduce safety, it makes it precise. We focus on risks that matter, avoid unnecessary restrictions, and recognise early warning signs relevant to them.

5. Culture matters more than templates
Even the best plans fail without the right mindset. We ask, “Who is this for?” before “What needs doing?” Plans stay flexible, are reviewed regularly, and reflect the person’s priorities. A simple test: would someone see a list of needs, or the person behind it?

At New Age Care, we believe care should be personal, purposeful, and empowering, so people can live with dignity, choice, and joy.

Alzheimer’s Disease (alz-HAI-mers)
Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disorder affecting memory, thinking, and daily activities. Over time, tasks like cooking, managing money, or keeping appointments can become difficult. It’s the most common cause of dementia, which refers to general cognitive decline that impacts everyday life.

Who Is at Risk?
Alzheimer’s mainly affects people over 65, with risk increasing with age. Less than 10% develop early-onset Alzheimer’s in their 40s or 50s, often linked to genetics.

What Happens in the Brain?
The brain has over 100 billion nerve cells (neurons) that support memory, learning, reasoning, and planning. In Alzheimer’s, two abnormal proteins build up:

Amyloid forms sticky plaques between nerve cells.
Tau forms tangles inside cells, disrupting communication.

Damage often begins in the hippocampus, which helps form new memories, then spreads to other areas.

Causes and Risk Factors
While the exact cause is unclear, research points to:

Rare genetic mutations in early-onset cases
A mix of genetics, lifestyle, and environment in late-onset cases
Key risk factors: age, family history, heart health, diabetes, diet, exercise, and mental activity

Symptoms to Watch For
Early signs:

Forgetting recent events or conversations
Trouble planning or solving problems
Confusion about time or place
Mood or personality changes

Later stages may affect speaking, understanding, dressing, or eating independently.

Moving Forward
There’s no cure yet, but early diagnosis and supportive care can improve quality of life. Research is exploring treatments and lifestyle strategies to reduce risk. Awareness and understanding help families and communities respond with empathy and care.

What is sarcopenia - and why should we be talking about it more?

Sarcopenia is a progressive, age-related loss of muscle mass, strength and motor function. It most often affects people over 65 and is especially common in later life care settings. Because it develops gradually, many people don’t notice it at first - but its impact can be significant.

Sarcopenia affects the muscles and the nerves that control movement, which means it can reduce mobility, balance and overall physical confidence. Over time, this can increase the risk of falls, fractures, hospital admissions and loss of independence.

Common symptoms include:
• Noticeable loss of muscle mass
• Ongoing fatigue and weakness
• Reduced coordination
• Difficulty with balance
• Struggling to walk, stand or rise from a chair
• Slower physical performance

What causes it?
Muscle naturally declines with age, but sarcopenia develops faster when combined with factors such as low physical activity, poor nutrition (especially not enough protein or vitamin D), reduced hormone levels and long-term inflammation. A sedentary lifestyle is one of the biggest contributors — and also one of the most changeable.
How is it managed?
While sarcopenia can’t be fully reversed, it can be slowed with the right support. Strength and resistance exercises, gentle mobility work, and a protein-rich, well-balanced diet are key strategies. Small, consistent changes can produce meaningful improvements in strength and stability.

Simple home safety steps also help reduce fall risk:
• Install handrails on stairs
• Improve lighting throughout the home
• Remove loose rugs and trip hazards
• Fit grab bars near toilets and showers
• Keep everyday items within easy reach

At New Age Care, we help older adults stay safer, stronger and more independent at home with personalised care and daily living support tailored to individual needs.
If you’re concerned about muscle weakness, mobility or fall risk - we’re here to help.
