Sorry to see in the news that Feargal Sharkey, singer and campaigner, is the latest celebrity to announce that he has prostate cancer. Good, however, to see him talking about it and encouraging guys to get tested. His case is another instance of cancer being discovered before showing any symptoms. Fortunately his GP ran a PSA test as part of a checkup when Sharkey presented with a bad cold and it was picked up. Not all GPs will do this, so if you're 45-50 or over it's worth asking yours to include a PSA test as part of your routine health checks.

Sorry to see in the paper this morning that Joe Biden, ex President of the USA has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer (even if I find it surprising that it's not been picked up before. I'd assume US Presidents get decent healthcare including PSA testing). The reports say that he will be getting hormone treatment which should slow the progression of the cancer. It really serves as a reminder that any man can get the disease - now the most common cancer in the USA. Good luck Joe!

If we diagnose just a few Stage3 and Stage 4 cases early through standard PSA tests we can help our Acute Trusts up to £200,000 pounds per patient over their potential lifetime treatment costs according to an EU study - so a small PSA cost early is well worth doing !

Big article on Prostate Cancer testing in the Times today - well worth a look. Sad to see so many men still being let down by their GPs refusing PSA tests - but great to see a positive local approach. Similar testing events are held locally in Herefordshire as well. We share information about these here, so do "follow" if you'd like to be kept up to date.

This short film by the director of 12 Years a Slave talks about how we need to normalise talking about prostate cancer, also one of the key aims of the HPCSG. Although it's specific to the Black community that has higher prevalence of prostate cancer, it applies equally to all of us. And for fun, see if you can name the movie stars!

Don’t be Embarrassed Male Cancer Awareness Campaign is pleased to introduce ‘Embarrassed’: a Sir Steve McQueen film, produced by Lammas Park. The film and subsequent campaign have been created to help raise awareness of prostate cancer within the black community. ...

Another celebrity announced that he has prostate cancer. Good to see him talking about it - especially as a Black man whose risk is significantly higher.

After his dad died at 67, the 12 Years a Slave film-maker knew it was only a matter of time before he would get prostate cancer, too. The disease kills 12,000 men a year in the UK – a disproportionate number of them black. Now, in a bid to save lives, he is speaking out about his own diagnosis, al...

Sorry to see Eddie Jordan, the Formula One promoter, be another victim of aggressive prostate cancer. Like many, it may have been treatable. If anyone needs a reason to get a PSA test - or a reason to give to a friend, partner or parent - this, or Chris Hoy - is it. BTW, do please follow our page to be sure to see our posts. Thanks
