In June, our Respiratory team hosted the Leeds Respiratory Palliative Care Network Education Day.

The day brought together our Respiratory Ward Nurses, Respiratory Specialist Nurses, LTHT Ventilation Services and staff from St Gemma's Hospice, Wheatfields Hospice and LCH Community Respiratory Team.

The aim of the day was to provide education and networking
for healthcare staff involved in the care of Respiratory patients with palliative care needs, update on research and guidelines and difficult case discussions.

Thanks to all those that contributed to a great day!

Our teams are always seeking opportunities to be at the forefront of technology, often trialling new treatment methods to provide the best possible care for our patients.
This week, Dr Muzahir Tayebjee and the EP team have performed their first Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) pilot study case using the Medtronic PulseSelect system.
The PFA system represents a new era in atrial fibrillation (AF) treatment, offering a potentially safer and more efficient solution for patients struggling with AF. The system utilises pulsed electrical fields to create lesions in the heart tissue, effectively isolating the pulmonary veins and interrupting the irregular electrical pathways that cause AF. Unlike traditional ablation methods that rely on heat (radiofrequency ablation) or cold (cryoablation), PulseSelect uses a non-thermal approach, potentially minimizing damage to surrounding structures.
This pilot study looks to compare long term outcomes utilising this new technology, with the well established cryoablation we currently use for the treatment of AF.
Great work!

We’re delighted to share some wonderful news – the Take Heart Roof Garden is now officially back open!

After a period of much needed refurbishment, the garden was officially reopened on Sunday 11th May with the Lord Mayor of Leeds cutting the ribbon.

The space has been refreshed with new flooring, seating areas, plants and a soon to be installed memorial wall. This space now offers a calm and uplifting escape for patients, visitors and staff.

The garden is open the whole week, however for safety, will briefly close whenever a helicopter is coming in to land.

A heartfelt thank you to Take Heart for generously funding the refurbishment. Their continued support makes an enormous difference, and the newly improved roof garden is a testament to the positive impact they have on our hospital.

We've got something special coming in September!

If you're a walker, runner, hiker, or pushchair stroller, why not get involved in our sponsored walk?

And if you don't want to walk, we need volunteers to help the day go smoothly. You could be a steward for the sponsored walk, or you could help on a stall. There will be lots of opportunities to get involved.

More details on how to register for the walk or volunteer on the day will be coming soon. In the meantime, get the date in your diary, Sunday 14th September.

It's going to be a great day!

Congratulations to our Immunology and Allergy team who have achieved re-accreditation to the Quality in Primary Immunodeficiency Services (QPIDS) scheme, the accreditation programme for primary immunodeficiency services in the UK!

Services undergo a programme of quality improvement before receiving a rigorous assessment against the QPIDS standards. Services which are shown to meet the standards are granted accreditation.

The QPIDS assessors commented on the high quality of the service being delivered by the Immunology team, their formal report included: "Patients are clearly at the heart of the service. The clinicians (including doctors, nurses pharmacists) are all passionate, work well as a team… The quality of care provided is excellent and the feedback from the patients has been very positive.”

Well done Immunology and Allergy team!

John, from Headingley, had had a cough for a few weeks when a fellow member at his gym suggested he should go for a self-request X-ray.

He went for the X-ray straight away and tests confirmed there was a 5cm tumour in his lung. Surgeons at Leeds Teaching Hospitals were able to operate and remove the tumour, and he is now taking medication to reduce the risk of recurrence.

John says: “If I hadn’t been prompted then, I might not have gone and I might be sat here now with a much bigger tumour and a very different outcome.

“It was a blessing that the service was available.”

Leeds Teaching Hospitals offers a walk-in chest X-ray to anyone over 40 who is registered with a Leeds GP and has had a cough, fatigue or tiredness, difficulty in breathing, loss of appetite or weight, chest pain, coughing up blood, or a lump in the neck, for over three weeks.

You can get an X-ray from Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, at Leeds General Infirmary, St James’s University Hospital, St George’s Centre in Middleton, Wharfedale Hospital and Chapel Allerton Hospital, and every day from 8am to 6pm at Seacroft Hospital.

Well done to Dr Hogarth and the cardiac devices team for implanting our first leadless atrial pacemaker device!

Until now, leadless pacing has only been possible in the ventricle (lower chamber). The Abbott AVEIR atrial device, no larger than the lid of a biro, can be implanted into the smaller atrial chamber (upper chamber) allowing synchronised pacing between the upper and lower heart.

Our patient will return home with no scars and a brand new functional dual chamber pacing system.

This cutting-edge technology will help our patients in the future who are not suitable for conventional (wired) pacemakers.
