What a magical Monday at OPAL's Dementia club in North Leeds! ๐ŸŽต

Our MD Farooq volunteers there every other Monday, and this week we were treated to something truly special - the wonderful Headingley Voice Choir came to perform for our group. The room filled with beautiful harmonies, and you could see faces light up as familiar melodies sparked precious memories.

Music has this incredible power to reach people living with dementia in ways that words sometimes can't. Watching everyone sing along, tap their feet, and smile reminded us why community connections matter so much.

Huge thanks to Headingle Voices for bringing such joy and to OPAL (Older People's Action in the Locality) for creating these vital spaces where people can connect, laugh, and feel valued.

This is what community care looks like. โœจ (Links in Comments)

โ˜€๏ธ BEAT THE HEAT: Essential Tips to Keep Loved Ones Safe

Hot weather can be dangerous for older adults and those with health conditions. Here's how to stay protected:

๐Ÿ  Keep homes cool: Close curtains early, turn off unnecessary lights, open windows when it's cooler outside
๐Ÿ’ง Stay hydrated: Aim for pale straw-coloured urine - water, diluted squash, and milk are best choices
๐Ÿ• Time it right: Stay indoors 11am-3pm when sun is strongest
๐Ÿ‘• Dress smart: Light, loose, light-coloured clothing

Remember: medications can increase heat risk, so check with healthcare professionals if concerned.

Caring for someone vulnerable? Our CareGivers are trained in heat safety protocols and can provide expert support when you need it most.

๐Ÿšจ HEAT WARNING: Know the Signs That Could Save a Life

With extreme temperatures forecast, it's vital we can spot when someone needs help. Heat exhaustion can quickly become life-threatening heatstroke if we don't act fast.
Watch for these warning signs:

โ€ผ๏ธ Confusion or disorientation
โ€ผ๏ธ Heavy sweating that suddenly stops
โ€ผ๏ธ Fast heartbeat or breathing
โ€ผ๏ธ Nausea, headache, and muscle cramps
โ€ผ๏ธ Feeling faint or weak

If someone shows these symptoms, move them to a cool location, remove excess clothing, give them water, and use cool, damp cloths. If you're worried or your symptoms worsen, call NHS 111. For heatstroke, call 999 immediately.

We're proud to announce that our care team recently completed a Dementia Friends session with a specialist from the older people's forum! ๐Ÿ’œ

As part of the Alzheimer's Society's largest-ever initiative to change perceptions of dementia, our CareGivers learned even more about supporting people living with this condition. It's about the small ways we can make a big difference, from understanding behaviours to creating meaningful connections.

Our team already provides specialist dementia care, but we believe in constantly improving our knowledge. Because everyone deserves compassionate, informed care that truly understands their needs.

If you or a loved one needs dementia support at home, we're here to help.

Caring for an elderly loved one is one of life's greatest acts of love - but it doesn't have to be a journey you face alone. ๐Ÿ’™

Many families start with simple help - a bit of shopping, medication reminders, extra visits. But as needs grow, the emotional and physical demands can become overwhelming. We see this every day, and we understand.

That's why we're here. Professional home care isn't about replacing family love - it's about supporting it. Our trained CareGivers handle the demanding tasks, so you can focus on being a loving daughter, son, or spouse again.

Your loved one stays in their cherished home, you get peace of mind, and family visits become about connection, not just care tasks.

Ready for a conversation? We offer free, no-pressure consultations.

Yellow Alert Thunderstorm โ€“ Warning for Asthma, COPD and Hayfever Sufferers.

The MET Office has also issued a Yellow Warning for a Thunderstorm from 15:00 on Saturday, June 21, 2025, until 04:00 on Sunday, June 22, 2025

Weather summary: Whilst many places will likely remain dry and unaffected, scattered thunderstorms may develop during Saturday afternoon and evening.

The most intense thunderstorms could produce frequent lightning, large hail, gusty winds, and heavy downpours.
Asthma symptoms may worsen significantly after thunderstorms, particularly during the summer months. High levels of pollen during thunderstorms trigger asthma.

Thunderstorm asthma can lead to increased hospital admissions and visits to the emergency department, particularly in vulnerable individuals. If you suffer from asthma, it is recommended that you stay indoors with the windows closed before, during, and after thunderstorms and carry your reliever inhaler.

Groups at most risk:โ€‹
Diagnosed asthma sufferers, particularly those with low adherence to preventer inhalers โ€‹
Undiagnosed asthma sufferersโ€‹โ€‹
Those with hay fever

Other risk factors
Being outside during a stormโ€‹
Opening windows during a storm
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Take action
In the event of a thunderstorm during pollen season, it is advised to go indoors and keep your windows and doors shut, if safe to do so

In the event of an asthma attack, complete the first aid actions for asthma (use a reliever inhaler, call 999 if symptoms are worsening or not improving)
Make sure you and the people you spend time with know what to do in case of an asthma attack.

Manage your asthma and hayfever
Remember, using your preventer inhaler properly and regularly is key to preventing asthma
Always have your reliever inhaler with you
Have an asthma review once a year and update your asthma action plan
If you experience wheezing and coughing with your hay fever, it is important to check you do not also have asthma
See your pharmacist or doctor for a hay fever/asthma treatment plan
Check if you should have an asthma reliever inhaler

Monitor pollen and weather conditions
Listen to the news and check your local weather forecast so that you know if โ€“ and when โ€“ thunderstorms are expected
Keep an eye on the weather and pollen forecasts
