Let's be honest, relapse rates can be high depending on the addiction, the person, the support on offer...
It's is important to look at each relapse and see it as a learning opportunity. What triggered it, what support could be put in place for the future. Underpinning every step with compassion and looking at how we learn from it.
Working with a therapist can support the recovery progress. Developing relapse plans, identifying the mental, emotional and physical triggers that often lead to increase relapse risks. Therapy can support recovery and develop love and self-compassion.
It’s all about progress made – a relapse does not necessarily mean starting back at square one. Working with compassion allows us to look at the overall progress made and not question the perfection of the journey.

International Women's Day 2021
Mental health disorders can affect the genders differently. Then drop this into a year which has also significantly affected women's wellbeing.

This year, the theme for International Women’s Day (8 March), “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world,” celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights the gaps that remain.

From a recent report CARE spoke to 6,200 women and 4,000 men in nearly 40 countries around the world. They identified three key areas of difference between the genders during the pandemic- mental health, food and jobs. 55% of women who spoke to CARE said they’d experienced some sort of income loss in relation to Covid-19. This compared to 34% of men. Due to the fact that women are more likely to work part-time hours or in the informal sector, they were also found to be worse hit professionally. When it came to challenges in the home, 41% of women said they were concerned about a lack of food compared to 30% of men.

Here's to more women shaping an equal future and a brighter future for all genders.

I'm certainly going to have a chutney tasting competition and start drawing my dog.

Shaun Ryder keeps chickens, while Mel Giedroyc organises chutney tastings. These small, affordable suggestions won’t end lockdown misery – but they might help

"This year’s World Mental Health Day, on 10 October, comes at a time when our daily lives have changed considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The past months have brought many challenges: for health-care workers, providing care in difficult circumstances, going to work fearful of bringing COVID-19 home with them; for students, adapting to taking classes from home, with little contact with teachers and friends, and anxious about their futures; for workers whose livelihoods are threatened; for the vast number of people caught in poverty or in fragile humanitarian settings with extremely limited protection from COVID-19; and for people with mental health conditions, many experiencing even greater social isolation than before. And this is to say nothing of managing the grief of losing a loved one, sometimes without being able to say goodbye."

Mental health problems affect around one in four people in any given year. They range from common problems, such as depression and anxiety, to rarer conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

Thinking about how we often perceive people to be brave and strong, capable and heroic, organised and driven. When the reality is they may have had very little choice and feel their response to the situation is anything but impressive or strong.
