Motion submission is now open for the BMA Medical Students Conference 2022!

Submitting a motion is your chance to attend conference and bring your idea for discussion at conference, with the chance of it being taken forward as policy.

Motion submission will close at 12 noon on the 21st of January. There will then be a medical school wide vote (you don’t have to be a BMA member to vote so encourage your friends to get involved!) from the 24th to the 28th. The top 3 motions will then be selected to be taken to conference in April by the students who proposed them.

For help writing motions look at the BMA guidance (https://www.bma.org.uk/what-we-do/annual-representative-meeting/writing-motions-for-arm-and-creating-bma-policy) or attend the BMA workshop (registration link: https://tinyurl.com/4ckk3mrn). You can also drop us a message with any questions!

Good luck writing motions!!

As BMA reps, our role is to communicate student concerns* to national BMA and feedback any advice given / action taken. Our role is also to update you on national issues relating to the BMA. We also attend national BMA rep meetings and conferences - a recent meeting discussed student support and medical apprenticeships.

We were involved in national issues such as placement disruption and student work during the pandemic, sustainability and accessibility of PPE, UKFPO changes, SJT, exam changes, the BMA racial harassment charter and Covid-19 vaccination for medica students.

Did you know this was part of our role? What did we do well this year? What could we have done better?

Leeds BMA reps have communicated with the medical school on a variety of issues this year - from covid-19 lateral flow tests and vaccinations to placement concerns and student support. We have also advocated for individual students and student cohorts. The majority of our work was online - via Teams meetings, virtual events, email and social media.

Did you feel your voice heard this year? What issues did you face? We are collecting feedback - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScxc-T78vLrQASf9sPZiHTE05tm2wH3-_dyjsiaIeOGMlI67g/viewform?usp=sf_link

Hello, it's Sonya, Deputy BMA Rep, here! When I ran for Leeds BMA rep I promised to reduce the financial, emotional and social stresses of medical school. As the year draws to an end I thought it was important to review my promises.
I pledged to
- increase support after traumatic incidents on placement: this has been raised this with the medical school
- ensure dermatology teaching used images from all skin tones: I've raised this directly with medical school and BMA Leeds has supported Leeds Racial Equity Network
- Increase support for students with financial problems and health issues: we haven't managed to do much work on this (partly due to Covid) but have supported individual students and am aware that national BMA is doing more work on this
- Ensure that students receive professional and polite communication: I've raised this with the medical school and training is being reviewed

In addition to the above I've responded to Covid-19 related challenges (eg vaccine and lateral flow test access), passed motions on support for student parents/pregnant students and sustainable reusable PPE at student BMA conference, advocated for individual students, facilitated communication between staff and students, discussed use of reusable PPE in clinical skills sessions and informed students of BMA work and events.

As the year draws to the close, BMA Leeds would appreciate your feedback - link above. Thank you!

Despite exams and the ending of the academic year, we're still working for you! This week we've been advocating for students on individual issues. Today the medical student committee is discussing lots of issues including student support, conference outcomes and medical apprenticeships in an online meeting. Next week we have scheduled meetings with medical school staff including the Dean. If you have anything you want us to discuss, please get in touch.

Wishing you all good luck for exams / exam results!

Extended Shadowing Updates - answering some questions

Is it voluntary? What about induction?
The UKFPO have liaised with the foundation schools regarding the voluntary nature of this extended shadowing period. Foundation schools will be responsible for coordinating the inductions at the local NHS trusts and hospitals.
There will be different approaches to organising this at different hospitals, but trainees must be able to choose whether to attend their extended shadowing and must receive full induction to the post during their 'normal' shadowing period. If trainees are being told that this extended shadowing period is compulsory or if their induction is being arranged in such a way that adequate induction will not be provided after the initial voluntary shadowing period, trainees must get in touch directly with their local foundation school or hospital. The UKFPO guidance is clear regarding this and all hospitals must comply with this (https://foundationprogramme.nhs.uk/extended-shadowing-for-f1-doctors-in-2021/). If trainees are still having issues, they should get in touch with our point of contact (https://www.bma.org.uk/about-us/contact-us/get-in-touch/contact-us).

When should my GMC registration start?
The start of the shadowing should be start date of GMC registration application as this is when professional patient contact will occur.

How was this decision made?
Students from all four nations have reported concerns about starting their foundation jobs with limited clinical exposure and cancelled/delayed summative assessments due to Covid-19 to the BMA and to their medical schools. Medical Schools Council and BMA raised these concerns with the UKFPO who liaised with HEE and foundation schools to secure funding for voluntary extended shadowing. This is in order to strengthen clinical experience and confidence of doctors who may otherwise have felt uncertain about starting.

We hope these answers help! Best wishes, your BMA Reps
