You've probably heard, sitting is the new smoking...and if you haven't, let us tell you a few things about sitting! Some of our team was involved in conducting a study on modifying sitting in remote workers and briefly discussed why you should care about sitting during your work hours.

"Office workers are subject to potential harm due to prolonged periods of sitting, which can account for up to 80 per cent of their workday. This sedentary lifestyle poses significant health risks, ranging from type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers to high blood pressure and increased mortality rates. Even more concerning is the fact that remote workers, growing in numbers since the pandemic, might be even more sedentary than their in-office counterparts, according to COVID-19-related data."

“It’s not just about sitting too much, it’s also about the pattern of how you sit throughout the day. Sitting for long, unbroken periods can also add increased risk for negative health outcomes.”

Walking a little more can have big impacts on those who need it most. Research shows having low daily step counts can increase your risk for mortality (amongst other risks). When those who are accumulating those lower daily step counts regularly increase their step counts by even 500-1000 steps per day, they see big risk reductions!!

Caterpillar Health works best for least and less active individuals - Get all your employees started in the right direction and keep them motivated using Nobel Prize-Winning behavioural science techniques.

Did you know? Even increases of 1000 steps/day have shown improvements in mood, energy and health ratings. In the UK, We're struggling with mental health - especially at work.

Using the UK Labour Force Survey (LFS), which is representative of the national population, comprising nearly 1 million observation: change in mental health has a much larger effect on absenteeism than a change in physical health (mental health effect is 3x as large than physical health. Thus, our results suggest that recovering from a mental health condition would reduce absence rates by 15% (from 4.0 to 3.4% on average) while recovering from a physical health condition would reduce absence rates by 8% (from 2.4 to 2.2% on average).

Caterpillar Health can help increase company morale, team engagement and focus on helping those get moving more. Physical activity has shown a protective effect on those who exercise more, are less likely to exercise depressive symptoms or be diagnosed with depression (across multiple geographical regions, ages, etc.).

What can Caterpillar Health offer your employees? Swipe to find out!

1. Personalised, adaptive goals 🤸‍♀️ - Caterpillar Health provides employees personalised, ACHIEVABLE step goals - not your typical 10,000 steps per day goal. Our evidence-based, adaptive goal setting is proven to increase and sustain physical activity over time.

2. We're focused on those who we can help benefit most 🥰- Caterpillar Health works best for least and less active individuals - Most employee wellness programs end up serving the “worried well” and fail the individuals who would benefit the most from a small increase in physical activity.

3. Peer-to-Peer Engagement 👯‍♂️ - Teams that step together, achieve together. Caterpillar Health connects colleagues and teams to achieve custom health goals - energising your team and workplace. We have "Step Together Challenges” and Leaderboards - where employees can engage in team-based goals OR a little friendly competition for some extra points.

4. In-App Rewards 🏆 - We're excited about this one! By walking and learning more, you can earn Caterpillar points and redeem them for an e-giftcard at 100+ retailers, like Argos, Starbucks, Amazon, Morrisons, Spotify, and so much more!

It's - which means it's time for a filling meal that we think is scrumptious! Recipe is from Abbey's Kitchen

▢ 1 cup long grain brown rice rinsed
▢ 2 cups low sodium vegetable broth
▢ ¾ cup red enchilada sauce
▢ 1 cup shredded vegan cheddar cheese or regular cheddar!
▢ 1 cup canned black beans drained and rinsed
▢ 2 tbsp green onions finely sliced
▢ salt and pepper to taste
Garnish:
▢ Vegan/regular sour cream
▢ Cilantro
▢ Green onions thinly sliced
▢ Chopped tomatoes
▢ Avocado

Instructions:
1. In a medium saucepot, combine the brown rice and the broth. Cover and bring to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer on medium low with the lid on.
2. Cook for about 25 minutes, and add in the enchilada sauce. Continue to cook with the lid on until the moisture is removed, about another 10-15 minutes. You should see crater-like steam holes on the surface. If you taste it and it’s still crunchy, add a splash more liquid and cook for another 5 minutes (with the lid on).
3. While still hot, fold in the cheese, green onions and beans, season with salt and pepper to taste.
4. Serve hot garnished with sour cream (vegan, if desired), cilantro, green onions tomatoes and avocado.

You can add some extra chicken or chick'n for even more fill or leftovers!

Taking chances with and (and life in general) can be exciting and challenging. It involves stepping outside your . This might mean trying a new exercise routine, trying a new recipe or fruit/veggie, increasing the weight you lift, or signing up for a challenging competition or event...or moving to a new city, trying a new career, etc.!

However, fear of failure, rejection, or uncertainty can keep us from pursuing our goals and dreams. But it is important to remember that taking chances doesn't necessarily mean that we will fail or experience negative consequences. Taking chances can lead to positive outcomes, such as discovering new opportunities, developing new skills, or meeting new people.

Approach taking chances with a growth mindset. This means seeing challenges and setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth rather than as signs of failure. By adopting this mindset, we can build resilience and develop the confidence to take risks and pursue our goals, even in the face of adversity.

Another important factor in taking chances is preparation. Making a plan can help us navigate the challenges and obstacles we may face. This might involve doing research, seeking advice from others, or developing a support network to help us stay on track. When it comes to goals, setting SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound) are the best way to set yourself up for success.

So whether it's starting a new healthy habit, pursuing a new career path, or taking on a new challenge, remember that taking chances can be a powerful tool for growth and self-discovery. Get after it!
