FYI: FHP foot health practitioners are NOT podiatrists or chiropodists. They are NOT regulated and they have NOT carried out the same level of study that we podiatrists have. They may do an online course in modules and at best two weeks practical training . They are best suited to working alongside a podiatrists as assistants rather than autonomous. Our scope of practice is very different as we can diagnose treat and our clinical knowledge and skills are that of clinicians and health care professionals recognised in law for your safety and protection.

☀️ Half way through summer holidays already ☀️

With the summer holiday definitely here you may be taking your young family swimming this year whether it be abroad or just to the local swimming baths.

It's important to know how to keep your families feet healthy this summer to protect them from verrucas.

We find many children will come into the clinic September with a new spot on their feet or hands🦶🖐.

But don't worry it's nothing to worry about!

Verrucas are a very common type of virus that normally occurs in children due to there immune system being so new and open.

Commonly children and adults won't get the verrucas from being in the pool but they can occur from around the sides or changing rooms and communal showers. This is due to the verruca virus can be spread through nice warm and moist conditions.

So how do you protect yourself and your family this summer ? ☀️
1. Try to get your little ones or yourself to wear sandals around the pool, in the showers and changing room. Trying to limit you barefoot touching anything like wet floors , will help to contain the spread.
2. You can buy Verruca socks for you and your little ones to protect them in the pool and while they are running around if sandals are inconvenient .
3. If you notice anything new appearing on the hands or feet that looks slightly dark or white it could be a Verruca appearing. At this stage we would recommend you book a Verruca initial advice and treatment appointment so we can discuss any treatment plans to get rid of this Verruca as soon as possible.

🦠 a Verruca is a virus and will normally go on it own by your immune system creating antibodies to get rid of it .
However if your noticing the Verruca isn't going or its getting bigger and spreading it may be worth booking an appointment to discuss with a podiatrist.
There are a number of treatment options depending upon a number of factors and medical history . So it’s important if the verrucae is troublesome you get professional advice .

Painful in growing toe nail ? 😩 ouch !!
Did you know that antibiotics only reduce the swelling and inflammation associated with it.?
Antibiotics are NOT a cure for the problem .
At The Laurels clinic we can perform a partial or full nail surgery under local anaesthetic to stop 🛑 the problem .
With over 35 years experience in both the NHS and private practice you are in very safe experienced hands . With gold standard policies and procedures including cross infection control as standard practice.
We can mimimise your recovery by following treatment with class four medical grade laser ( painless ) to help promote healing further too , for a painless and permanent solution.

I’m currently on annual leave in Dubai.
So I thought I’d write about the importance of SPF .
Having recently been diagnosed again with a BCC ( Basal cell carcinoma) to my shin this time . Last time was my face above my eye .
So ., skin cancers are common but can be dangerous if left untreated. The best prevention is SPF everyday to face ears and neck .
A good broad spectrum daily use is best . They can be worn alone or under makeup .
If holidaying then sun cream needs to applied everywhere it’s exposed to sun .
Don’t scrimp .
It’s only effective if you use enough and regularly reapply . Sun cream also has an expiration date so check yours .
Every two hours is recommended for sun cream application.
Star ratings ⭐️ first created by Boots shows the level of UVA AND UVB protection. Other brands use the Japanese system of PA followed by plus signs ie PA++
SPF factors refer to the level of protection to UVB . An SPF 30 shields 97% whilst SPF 50 shields 98% .
If you are freckled, red haired or very pale skin . Use highest possible.
Check moles and any new lesions . If unsure check with your GP .
BCC are destructive and other cancers like melonoma can be life threatening.
Enjoy ☺️ the sunshine for all its benefits but be sun safe .
