Why do so many women choose to see a Chiropractor during pregnancy?

1. For a functional assessment - many pregnant patients visit us without any pain at all but simply because they want to ensure their body is functioning well. When you start to think of pregnancy and labour as something we must actively prepare for, doing the ‘bodywork’ is as important as the ‘brain’ work to prepare your mindset.

2. Because they have been referred by their midwife for an assessment as they hope to have a physiological birth..
Think of your pelvic & abdominal cavity as a ‘vessel’ for your baby to grow and live for 9 months - anything that compromises the space or symmetry of this vessel can affect baby’s position or cause discomfort for mum…
💡Therefore - anything that improves this space, such as specialist Chiropractic Care, helps to release tension and improve mobility which can help baby find their most optimal position in preparation for labour, and can help mum feel her best without discomfort and restriction 🙏🏻

3. To manage pregnancy-related discomfort or dysfunction.
Common complaints include:

👉🏼 Postural changes
👉🏼 Restricted movement
👉🏼 Lower back and hip pain
👉🏼 Pelvic girdle dysfunction (PGD)
👉🏼 P***c symphysis dysfunction (SPD)
👉🏼 Sciatica
👉🏼 Neck and shoulder dysfunction

The issues listed above are very common during pregnancy due to changes in posture, weight distribution, and ligament laxity caused by hormones, for example the increase in progesterone and the presence of a hormone ‘relaxin’.

❓Relaxin is a hormone produced during pregnancy that plays a vital role in preparing the body for childbirth. It is primarily secreted by the ovaries and placenta and has effects on various tissues in the body including the ligaments of the spine and pelvis.

💪🏼 How Chiropractic Helps:
Gentle adjustments, joint mobilisations, soft tissue work, and rehabilitation to help the body adapt to pregnancy by alleviating dysfunction, reducing pain and improving mobility.

A little update from me…

As most of my patients now know, my husband Will and I have decided to take a 5 month sabbatical to go and explore Europe in our campervan and spend some time with loved ones too!

This campervan has been 14 months of renovations in the making, with Will fitting in van building between busy shifts on A&E as a doctor, so we are very excited to go and enjoy it now! We both work in professions where we see people sadly limited by their health, often in situations they never imagined they would be in, and it’s given us the view that LIFE IS TOO SHORT!! And not in a morbid way, but in a ‘do the stuff that makes us happy’ kind of way, and we are very fortunate to have jobs that’ll be there when we get back 🙏🏻

The lovely Brittany will be looking after .health.hub.leeds and the social media, and both her and Jodie will be covering my patients, so please go and see them if you’re in need of treatment! 🙏🏻

My first day back in clinic is Wednesday 17th September so I’ll look forward to catching up with all my lovely patients then ☺️

CHIROPRACTIC CARE THROUGHOUT PREGNANCY🤰🏼

During pregnancy the female body goes through countless changes to create the best possible environment for a growing baby. However, these changes and differing hormone levels can affect how the body functions, particularly if there are pre-existing imbalances or old injuries. One example of this is an increase in the hormone relaxin which is released to prepare the body for birth by relaxing the ligaments of the pelvis and low back (alongside all the other ligaments in the body). Unfortunately these change plus the increased weight and change to postures can cause musculoskeletal aches and pains and can sometimes lead to a condition called pelvic girdle dysfunction (PGD/SPD).‼️

As chiropractors we assess for these imbalances and provide hands on treatment to help improve function and reduce pain. Often this involves gentle manual therapies and hands on release/ to correct the dysfunction and create balance within the pelvis, spine and soft tissues. We may also advise specific lifestyle changes and give exercises to help prevent the condition from worsening and prevent it reoccurring.💆🏼‍♀️

If you’re pregnant and wandering whether chiropractic may be helpful for you then feel free to send me a message with any queries you may have ✅

Big thanks to for our pregnancy pillow which allows our pregnant women to lie comfortably and safely on their front during treatment 🫶🏼🤩

👉🏼 Positional head deformity (Positional plagiocephaly)

A common condition we see in babies, particularly in their first 6 months of life. It often occurs as a result of imbalances in the muscles of the neck and shoulders due to birth trauma or intrauterine constraint. This then causes the infant to favour sleeping with their head rotated to one side and at a time when their skulls are still forming, this can affect the head shape resulting in:
➡️ a flattened area of the head at the back
➡️ prominent forehead on one side
➡️ prominent cheekbone on one side
➡️ uneven ear height

These babies often present as unsettled, restless babies who don’t like to be put down on their backs and some may also struggle with breastfeeding due to their inability to rotate and latch effectively.

As Chiropractors we assess and treat these musculoskeletal imbalances using gentle, safe and effective treatments specific for babies. By restoring the normal movement and balance, the head shape is naturally corrected whilst the babies head is still adaptable.

Feel free to send me a message if you would like any further information ✅
