What a wonderful and busy few days we have had here at Ghyll Royd! 🌟

We kicked off the week on Monday by celebrating International Women in Art. Our residents got stuck into a fantastic International Women’s Day art workshop, showcasing some incredible creativity. 🎨 While the weekly schedules were being delivered and we enjoyed our usual room visits and catch-ups, the afternoon really came alive with a "Ghyll Royd Sings" session. It was lovely to hear everyone joining in with their favourite golden oldies! 🎢 🎡 πŸ’›

Yesterday morning, we stayed active with our armchair exercise classβ€”complete with weights for those looking for an extra challenge πŸ’ͺβ€”followed by a very competitive game of boules. A huge congratulations to our contender, who managed to take home the cup this week! πŸ† In the afternoon, we were delighted to welcome Tom and Bob back to entertain us. They even performed a special request they first performed about 18 months ago, originally for our oldest resident at the time. It was a beautiful moment to hear that tune again and remember her love of singing and a good cup of tea. β˜•οΈ ✨

Spellman Care warmly invites our current and former community to join us across the weekend as we remember and honour those lost during the pandemic. πŸ•―οΈβ€οΈ

For the official COVID-19 day of reflection, we are holding our reflections over the whole weekend to ensure everyone in our community has the opportunity to take a moment for themselves and their loved one. We welcome residents, staff, and both current and past relatives to add a heartfelt message or a loved one's name to our memorial window. πŸ•ŠοΈβœ¨

We know this remains a difficult time for many, so we have placed these memorials on the front doors of our homes on both sides of the glass. At each home, you will find a tub of hearts and pens placed right by the windows. Please feel free to take a heart, write your own personal message, and stick it directly to the glass as part of our memorial wall. This allows you to participate and share a moment of reflection in a way that feels most comfortable for you, without the need to come inside if you would prefer not to. ❀️

Please feel free to drop in at any time on Saturday 7th March and Sunday 8th March. You can find our Wall of Hearts at:

πŸ“ Craven Nursing Home
πŸ“ Ghyll Royd Care Home
πŸ“ Springbank Care Home
πŸ“ Steeton Court Nursing Home

We look forward to coming together in kindness, sharing memories, and celebrating the lasting connections that unite us all. πŸ•ŠοΈβ€οΈ

We have some truly inspiring news to share from our Ghyll Royd Care Home community! One of our residents' relatives, Private Harry Wilcock, is gearing up to take on the ultimate endurance challenge by participating in the IRONMAN Leeds triathlon. πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈπŸš΄β€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

As a Veteran Friendly care home, we are incredibly proud to share Harry’s story as he and his close friend push themselves to the absolute limit. This gruelling event involves a 4km open-water swim, followed by a 180km cycle, and finishes with a full 42km marathonβ€”all completed consecutively.

What makes this even more remarkable is that neither Harry nor his teammate come from an endurance background. They have moved from relative inexperience to training relentlessly for one of the toughest physical and mental challenges on the planet. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

They are undertaking this massive feat to raise vital funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. SSAFA provides lifelong support to serving personnel, veterans, and their families, ensuring those who have given so much for others receive the help they deserve. πŸ’™

We would love for our community to see the incredible work they are doing. If you would like to read more about their journey or share the link to their fundraiser, you can find their JustGiving page here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/ironman2026?utm_medium=qrcode&utm_source=offline&utm_content=brandedqr

Please join us in wishing Harry the very best of luck with his final weeks of training. We are all rooting for you! 🌟

We had a fantastic day out yesterday as our residents headed off to the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford! 🚌✨

It was a truly fascinating trip, filled with nostalgic moments and plenty of new things to discover. We spent a wonderful morning exploring the history of photography and television, which sparked some lovely conversations and trips down memory lane for everyone involved. There is nothing quite like seeing the cameras and sets from years gone by to get everyone sharing their favourite stories πŸŽ₯πŸ“Έ

After a good look around the exhibitions, we made sure to find a cosy spot to refuel. We enjoyed a lovely lunch together, chatting about all the incredible inventions we’d seen throughout the galleries. It was the perfect way to cap off such an engaging and educational morning out πŸ°β˜•

Everyone returned home with plenty to talk about, and we are already looking forward to our next adventure together. A huge thank you to the museum for having us yesterday 🌟

What a fantastic day we all shared yesterday...

🎹 A Musical Start: The morning began on a high note as our talented piano teacher, 'M', took to the keys. She spent some time using the tiny tablet to showcase her musical talents and it was truly a joy to watch her get into the flow of things so quickly. It was clear to see how much she enjoyed being back at the piano, filling our halls with such beautiful melodies.

🧼 Scents and Stories: We then moved into a wonderful afternoon of reminiscing as we gathered to explore the Boots Memory Box. There is something so powerful about the connection between memory and our senses. As we passed each item around, the room was filled with the familiar scents of coal tar, old school soap, eucalyptus oil, and lavender.

These items sparked so many stories about our own homes and lives. We particularly enjoyed looking through the old advertising posters, which prompted plenty of laughs and "I remember that!" moments as we spotted products from years gone by. Thank you Boots UK Guiseley for donating this fantastic resource!

πŸ† The Dominoes Championship: To top the day off, the tension was high for our latest Dominoes Championship! It turned into an epic battle between two of our residents from Blossom, both determined to take home the prize. We are delighted to announce that the trophy is now being proudly displayed in the Blossom lounge. It’s certainly been sitting over on Rowan for far too long, so it’s great to see it move to a new home for a while! 🌸

One of the most rewarding parts of working at Ghyll Royd Care Home is witnessing those truly special moments between our incredible residents and the local community. 🎹

Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome the talented pianist, Mary, to the home for a wonderful performance of some well-loved classics. However, the afternoon took a magical turn when Mary realised she recognised one of our residents in the audience as her very own former piano teacher! 🌟

It was an incredibly moving moment as our resident joined Mary to take to the stage herself, performing some of her favourite tunes with grace and skill. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room as we watched a teacher and student reunite through the power of music. 🎢✨
