Hello, I am a fully qualified, insured and enhanced DBS checked therapeutic counsellor, psychotherapist, clinical supervisor and accredited mentor with 17 years post graduate experience. I am an accredited member of the ACCPH ethical body and hold Chartered Fellow Membership. Happy international women's day! I would have hoped that by 2026 we wouldn't need this day but this year I feel we need it more than ever.

One in three women have experienced physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence at least once in their lives.

8% of women and girls 15 years and older report sexual violence from a non-intimate partner (a crime which is severely under-reported).

In 2024, around 50,000 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members.

I often teach couples a simple reframing exercise that calms the heat in the moment and makes connection possible again.

Start by pausing the argument for one minute. Each partner then names the feeling beneath the words (“I feel overwhelmed,” “I feel unheard”) while the other listens without defending.

Next, the listener reflects back what they heard and offers one brief reassurance (“I hear you,” or “I want to understand”). Repeat the cycle twice.

What usually happens? The tone softens, blame decreases, and curiosity returns — not because problems vanish, but because two people feel seen enough to keep talking. In my therapy sessions I expand on this skill to explore the recurring stories that fuel those fights and help partners build lasting patterns of safety and repair.
