USING BALLET TO INSPIRE AND EDUCATE DISADVANTAGED YOUNG WOMEN AND GIRLS IN GAMBIA

The Gambia Ballet Factory runs free ballet classes and educational workshops in four local nursery and primary schools, introducing the basic concepts of classical ballet, movement, music appreciation, rhythm, and poise.

For true beginner students, these classes are the perfect introduction to the fundamentals of ballet, with the aim of developing a skillset in traditional dance elements in a non-competitive, fun environment, with musical accompaniment.

They also run a number of workshops at local youth clubs and community centres in Gambia that give underprivileged girls and young women a chance to experience ballet lessons, ballet classes, watch ballet film shows and participate in ballet and musical appreciation workshops.

By supporting the work of The Gambia Ballet School, we can help them to continue to introduce hundreds of children from various schools, orphanages, and foundations to the wonderful world of ballet.

It costs around £250 per year to sponsor a trainee ballet dancer, as part of an annual ballet scholarship programme.

Thank you to Peak Physiotherapy Limited for taking the lead on this project by providing scholarships to two young dancers in 2024.

If you would like to help us sponsor more aspiring young dancers and change their lives, then please do feel free to support us by making a donation!

***ACCESS TO EDUCATION FOR ALL***

When our children go to school in the UK, we take for granted that they will have access to clean water, school meals and educational resources, and that any disability is accommodated for. When young girls reach a certain age they have access to the necessary hygiene products to stay in school during this time.
However in Tanzania and Kenya these things are not so readily available.

In rural Tanzania, primary school children are expected to carry water to school, sometimes distances of over 1.5km. That’s why we focus on water projects to provide on-site clean water.

There are thousands of children in Tanzania who are deaf and miss out on education as a result. There are government funded schools, but they lack the provision of necessary resources like uniform, food and books that they need, and their families cannot afford these. We sponsor these children to enable them to access these schools.

When a schoolgirl begins to menstruate, she will miss school during this time, as she lacks the essential hygiene products needed to enable her to attend school. We help provide these so that she can gain an education without barriers.

In Kenya, thousands of school children do not have access to a nutritional school meal, by supporting the provision of Uji (nutrient enhanced porridge) they would otherwise go hungry.

All of these projects support the access of education for all.

HELP US FUND OUR NEXT FRESH WATER PROJECT FOR A TANZANIA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Too many young children from primary schools in Tanzania still have to walk many kilometres a day to collect water from a dirty pond, leaving them vulnerable to various diseases. This walk can also often be fraught with dangers and cause extreme fatigue reducing their ability to learn.

Following the funding of our first fresh water borehole and pump to the Mvugwe Primary School, Kigoma Region, Tanzania, we would like to do more....

To help us fund our second fresh water project, this time for Songambele Primary School, Kigoma Region, we've set up this campaign with a goal of £1,500.

With your help, The Stevens Foundation can reach this goal.

Please help if you can. Every donation makes a difference.
