This week is Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Week – MS is a condition that affects nerves in your central nervous system. Once diagnosed, MS stays with you for life, but treatments and specialists can help you to manage the condition and its symptoms.

One of our patients, Amanda, recently marked an impressive personal milestone of receiving her 100th infusion of Natalizumab at our Neurology Day Case Unit.

Amanda has been coming to hospital every four weeks over the past eight years for infusions to help treat Multiple Sclerosis. She had recently mentioned her upcoming anniversary to the team, and how it was an important reminder of how far she has come on her MS journey since her diagnosis.

Ward clerk Kirsty Marshall decided to make the occasion really special, and went the extra mile by arranging balloons and decorations for the unit. Pictured is Amanda receiving her very first infusion in 2018 ("note the walking aid I no longer need"), and again receiving her 100th infusion more recently.

Well done, Kirsty, this is a great example of patient-centred care!

You may remember our colleagues in Radiotherapy taking on the Bexley Wing staircase challenge in support of patient and University of Leeds researcher Dr Shaunna Burke.

Across the department, nearly 13,000 metres were climbed in just five days, with one team going even further by climbing an extra 600 metres, taking the total ascent to 9,470 metres – equivalent to 7,015 flights of stairs.

After being diagnosed with advanced, incurable breast cancer, Shaunna is taking on Mount Everest for a second time. She will be accompanied by fellow researchers, who will monitor the impact of the expedition on her health, all whilst raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

As Shaunna prepares to begin this incredible challenge, we’d like to wish her the very best of luck.

A new pregnancy app giving families support and information in six different South Asian languages has been launched in Leeds.

The JANAM app features videos in English, Gujarati, Urdu, Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi and Tamil. It will be offered to all new patients from South Asian backgrounds but anyone wishing to use it can ask their midwife for an access code.

“We are really pleased to be bringing the JANAM app to South Asian communities in Leeds,” says Jenny Roddy, Consultant Midwife Health Equity, Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

“The app helps South Asian mums feel confident and informed every step of the way. It’s easy to use and is a great way of sharing information that people can understand and relate to.”

Happy Vaisakhi to all our colleagues and patients who are celebrating!

Today we recognise Vaisakhi, an important Sikh festival marking the founding of the Khalsa and formalisation of the Sikh identity in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It’s a time that celebrates community, equality, and selfless service; values that reflect our commitment to compassionate, patient-centred care.

This evening and tomorrow on Yom HaShoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day - we join in honouring the memory of the six million Jewish people, including 1.5 million children, who perished in the Holocaust.

Dr Rochelle Wilder, Chair of the Trust’s Jewish Network, lights this candle in commemoration of Myni Bronfajn who was murdered by the N***s, aged 16 years old in 1942 in Poland. It is also in memory of her family, who also perished along with six million others. May their memories be a blessing and a prayer for peace and serenity throughout the world.

It was wonderful to welcome Richard, and his mum Ann, back to ward J83 last week where they personally delivered a donation of £1,000 to our Liver Transplant and Hepatology team.

Richard was a patient on the ward for over four months after becoming very unwell and requiring a liver transplant which he successfully received one year ago.

In celebration of her recent 90th birthday, instead of receiving gifts, Ann asked her family and friends to donate money for the team who saved her son’s life.

This is a beautiful gift from the family and we are incredibly grateful to those who donated.

We've heard some great feedback from the Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) apprentices, who spent two days offsite with external partners putting their orthopaedic skills to the test as they completed hip, knee, and trauma practicals, practising their sewing skills, and trialling the latest robotic technology.

The apprentices came from all three years of the apprentice programme and were grateful for the invaluable opportunity. Thanks go to external partners DePuy Synthes and Johnson and Johnson.

We had a paw-some visit from Frankie yesterday at the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease.

Frankie is an Australian labradoodle and a registered therapy dog. This week he's been helping children at the centre with an Easter Egg hunt and some artwork, as well as just being his adorable self.
