Inspired by Marvel Television's Ironheart, we've teamed up with The ACLT (African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust) to empower more donors of Black heritage to become real-life superheroes by donating blood.

We urgently need 16,000 more Black heritage donors to maintain vital blood stocks. While sign-ups are at record numbers, the need is outpacing new donors.

Martine lost 80% of her blood and both legs in the 2005 London bombings, but blood donors helped give her a second chance at life ❤️

"Thanks to people who give blood, the blood I needed was there for me.

"I've done so much since then: got married, had my son, competed at the Paralympics. None of that would have been possible without blood donors."

20 years on, we remember all those affected by that day, and honour every donor who stepped forward when London needed them most.

Today marks 20 years since the 7/7 London bombings. We remember both the lives lost and the extraordinary response from our donors and staff.

On that day, our blood donation services faced demand significantly higher than any previous emergency.

Incredibly, around 170,000 (22%) of our current donors were already giving blood back then.

Today, we’re celebrating two very special 77th birthdays… 🎂

On 5th July 1948, the NHS was born – as well as Christian, who is one of the 11 people in England who shares the same birthday as the NHS and still gives blood!

Christian has been donating for about 50 years after being encouraged to do so by a former boss.

He says: “One of the reasons I give blood is simply because I am fit and healthy enough to do it.

“I am also a Neo donor which means I can donate to newly born babies, which I am very pleased about!”

Thank you, Christian for your commitment to blood donation over the years. We’re wishing you and the NHS a very happy birthday ❤️

"90% mortality rate without plasma exchange." These were the terrifying words Sophie read from a leaflet, as doctors rushed her into theatre. 💔🚑

Just days after giving birth to baby Arlo, Sophie was fighting for her life with a rare blood disorder.

Sophie needed her entire body’s plasma replaced with donor plasma, literally washing away the antibodies that were attacking her from within.

The 35 year old, from Telford, developed thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), causing clots through her small blood vessels. Doctors believe it was an autoimmune response to the pregnancy.

"It escalated so quickly. As soon as I got to A&E in Birmingham there was a doctor waiting for me, so I knew it was serious," Sophie says.

"They took me straight to theatre. I remember getting a leaflet and it said without plasma exchange there is a 90% mortality rate from an acute TTP episode."

In total, Sophie received 27 bags of fresh frozen plasma and 4 units of blood during her treatment in July 2023. 🩸

Grateful for all the blood and plasma transfusions, Sophie’s partner Dylan became a donor, choosing to give plasma to make medicines at our Birmingham Plasma Donor Centre.

Sophie says: "Without plasma, Dylan wouldn't have his partner, and my son wouldn't have his mum.

“Dylan’s been my hero since the day we met, but, genuinely, he’s been something else since I was diagnosed with TTP, and now he has donated to help someone else.”

Sophie has been told that TTP can relapse, so she has regular check-ups and blood tests.
