Hi everyone, I'm Rachel Oldfield and I wanted to introduce myself to those who are new to my page and RSO Leather.
I am a completely independent Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) Registered Qualified Bit and Bridle Fitter. I am a LANTRA and Horse Bit Fit Advice Bit and Bridle Fitting Consultant and a member of The Equine Fitters Directory and Equinnect and the Equestrian Business Awards Bit and Bridle Fitter of the Year 2026.
By not being affiliated to any manufacturer or brand any recommendations I make are made solely on what is best for the horse and rider as we go through the assessment and only make alterations to the bit and bridle if needed.
Appointments are usually around 90 minutes long and during the assessment you will get to try lots of bits, making it much more worthwhile than other fitters that carry a particular brand. I carry a good range which include Neue Schule, Myler, Bombers, Aster Bits, Fager, Expert Bits and Sprenger. All of my bits have been sourced and purchased myself and all are available to order through the various manufactures or in tack shops.
Unlike many other bit and bridle fitters, I ‘am a skilled, experienced and knowledgeable SMS Qualified Saddler which means I make and repair all bridles and saddles. I understand how important it is when it comes to the quality and safety of all the materials used and more importantly the correct fit and the process behind making all the individual bridle pieces. Where possible, I can offer the service to repair or alter existing tack.
As well as my own handmade, handstitched bridles and bridle pieces I also carry the Henry James Bridle range. Both of these options are perfect for selecting the individual pieces that are correct for your horse which means that we can get the bridle that is an exact fit for your horse and is perfect for what you need, your level and what discipline you are doing.
✨️Initial Consultation
We’ll begin by gathering information about you and your horse, including history, current tack, and any issues you’ve noticed. I’ll assess facial and mouth conformation, head shape, and check for signs of nerve sensitivity caused by the current setup.
✨️Discussion of Behavioural Indicators
I’ll ask specific questions to understand if your horse has shown signs of evasion, discomfort, or resistance potentially linked to the bridle or bit.
✨️Ridden Assessment
Your horse will be ridden in their usual tack. This allows you to share feedback and for me to observe their movement, way of going, and any behavioural signs under saddle.
✨️Problem Solving & Planning
We’ll discuss what’s working and what isn’t. Together, we’ll agree on realistic adjustments or changes to the bit and/or bridle to support your horse’s individual needs and your chosen discipline.
✨️Try New Setup
If changes are made (e.g. new bit, adjusted straps, bridle parts), I’ll ask to see the horse ridden again. I’ll look for improved comfort, relaxation, and freedom of movement, especially around the jaw, poll, face and all along the body.
✨️No Rush
Every horse is different—some respond quickly, others need more time. I take care to go at you and your horse’s pace.
If your horse has exhibited any of the following behaviours, then contact me to book your bit and bridle fit assessment asap.
