A World first procedure to target and destroy kidney tumour took place Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Anthony Harris aged 73 from Castleford was the first patient in the World to receive this novel approach to the treatment of a kidney tumour. Following an overnight stay for observation, Mr Harris was able to return home and continue recovery.

The procedure was performed in Leeds, UK, by Professor Tze Min Wah, Professor of Interventional Radiology at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, UK.
This pioneering treatment approach uses the novel science of histotripsy, a form of therapeutic focused ultrasound. This destroys tumours without the need for invasive incisions or needles entering the patient’s body.

This marked the initial treatment in the Histosonics sponsored “CAIN” Trial, which represents a significant milestone for kidney cancer treatment with histotripsy as a needle-less technology and a paradigm shift from this point onwards for kidney cancer treatment generally.

Congratulations to Dr Rani Khatib and colleagues on their highly commended at the HSJ Partnership Awards which took place last Thursday. The collaboration Dr Khatib has been leading on with Boehringer Ingelheim was highly commended in the Best Pharmaceutical Partnership category.

Together, the Trust and Boehringer Ingleheim have been working collaboratively to reduce cardiovascular risk in people with diabetes after a heart attack, and have established an innovative combined cardiology and diabetes service for patients. The holistic approach has lowered the risk of further health issues, reduced the number of appointments and improved patient satisfaction.

This collaboration demonstrates how we are able to help transform care and create a more sustainable healthcare service. Huge congratulations to the team that made this possible. Well done.
